So i was messing around on the internet and then all of a sudden i only have 1gb of ram left with only chrome running. Go on processes and mcafee is like fu** you. Has this happened to anyone else.

If you have Win8 then all you need is Defender.  If you have Win7 then AVG.

 

Or do what I do, I just put my system behind a hardware firewall and don't visit websites with questionable content.

I use Webroot Anti-virus and it only takes up 9 mb of ram.

The dotted line is MSE/Windows Defender. Compare real-world protection and then performance (system resources). You basically want to be using Avast. AVG and Avira come close in real-world protection, but lose out to Avast and even MSE in performance.

What firewall do you use? Also I should probably add that a firewall and an anti virus software serve different purposes. What you are saying would be like saying "I don't need a seat belt while driving because I am wearing a helmet".

I understand that, that's where the second part of the statement comes from, I was taking a jockular stab that he is getting things from visiting questionable sites.  Firewall AND not visiting questionable sites.  It's a joke.  Right now I'm running fortigates (dual in HA) with a content server sitting behind it to fish out things that could make it through to corrupt a system that resides past my dmz.  I do still run defender though.
