i really don't understand how these companies are still going so well. I mean i've been using Security Essentials for a while now, and it's nice, very unobtrusive and does anything i need. But what i mean is that these programs really only stop the viruses that you deserve to get if you click on them crappy links! :P

I understand that, that's where the second part of the statement comes from, I was taking a jockular stab that he is getting things from visiting questionable sites.  Firewall AND not visiting questionable sites.  It's a joke.  Right now I'm running fortigates (dual in HA) with a content server sitting behind it to fish out things that could make it through to corrupt a system that resides past my dmz.  I do still run defender though.

OK good. I thought that you meant that your only defense was a firewall, which is a horrible idea. Just to be clear, you do know how to configure a firewall, correct? Because I have seen plenty of people who buy an expensive firewall and then think they are safe, without configuring it properly or even understanding what it does.

It's good that you use defender as well, but I would suggest you install a proper anti-virus software as well. The thing about "I don't use an AV and I am not infected" is that you can be infected without knowing it (especially if you don't have an anti-virus installed).

The dotted line is MSE/Windows Defender. Compare real-world protection and then performance (system resources). You basically want to be using Avast. AVG and Avira come close in real-world protection, but lose out to Avast and even MSE in performance.

Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows Defender are (at least on Windows 7) not the same things. Defender is basically just antispyware while MSE is a fully fledged anti-virus software. It's also worth noting that a lot of those programs that looks good in the "threats blocked" test give quite a few false positives

Considering I'm a CEH I'd hope I know what I'm doing, as for the firewall, yes.  I've built out several datacenters for everything from fortune 500 companies to healthcare to even DoD and government contracts.

I actually started doing all this stuff probably right around when you were born lol.  I built my first computer when I was 11 years old (which was a fairly huge feat 20 years ago) and coded my first program when I was 13.  I was one of those people who jumped head first into the GNU project as soon as he heard about it, and now I pretty much devote my life to the usage of computers, networking, and methods of creating greater accessibility while still maintaining above reasonable levels of security (a paranoia that originated in my military training lol).

Anyway, my home network is actually very simply convoluted.  It's more than you would never need for a home, but is so modular and inclusive to guests (while still maintaining that DoD level of security) that I can't help but want to keep things the way they are.

I was referring to the Windows 8 Windows Defender, which I recall being MSE for all intents and purposes. Also, the page I linked has a false-alarms chart, so you can take them into account, too.
