My dad's had a Seagate drive in his desktop for over 8 years now. It does start making noise now, though

Not all of them are bad

Just don't get anything above 4TB as they are the ones that usually fail (I think )

The only bad Seagate drives are the 3TB Barracuda's and the 1TB 2.5". This is where the whole ' Seagate are bad ' came from.

To be fair 8 years is a hella long time.

That's unfortunate to hear... What's wrong with them? I'm using a 3TB Barracuda atm

Everyone seems to joke about them being very unreliable i have a 2TB 7200 rpm Barracuda i have had for almost 2 years and it has not failed

It's mainly a lot of mis-information due to the backblaze thing where they were the highest failing drives they tested, but due to improper testing, sample size and amongst other things their data while useful should be taken with a grain of salt for it's accuracy.

Overall theses days most HDD manufacturers are pretty much on the same level in terms of reliability and the technology they put into them.

High failure rates. But if yours is working then it will be fine. (3/6 month failures are high)

Nothing in particular, just a couple of bad batches, overall Seagate is as reliable as any other brand and since you can get two Seagate Desktop hdd's for the price of one WD Black...

My parents have an iMac that has gone through about five hard drive replacements. All Seagate 1TB hard drives. They are all dead.

Hitachi drives are where it's at, in my opinion. I don't hear about them dying nearly as much as Seagate.

there's always a batch of series from their product happens to be a bad product

first major notice when they release 750GB drive

2nd one was 1.5TB

and last time is their 2TB line up

and that was after major flood in thailand.

if there's recent hiccups, I might not notice it, I haven't look up to add more storage.

I see it really as a luck of the draw thing. I hear bad things about all the drive makers. I also hear good things. I guess it depends how much your package was thrown around in shipment.

Honestly? I think it's an exaggerated thing tbh, backblaze's results don't help (whether you believe them or not is another matter that isn't worth discussing, it just ends in a fanboy war). In fact, Seagate don't help themselves with the barracudas with their cheap ass 1 year warranty.

I wouldn't completely rule them out as a company... Though personally I wont touch things with 1 year warranties if I can help it. Tbf it's all luck, I had a 2 year old momentus die off a few days ago (been on it's last legs for a while) but I ripped another momentus out my 360 which is almost 5 years old and seems to be going strong.

Two 1TB barracuda's in Raid 0 never failed on me for a couple of years, up until now.

I build lots of PCs to my friends and relatives. Some of the people other than I build PC to them they complain about Seagate drives failing. I've almost 20 of waste andd useless drives. All of them are Seagate. I haven't heard anything bad about WD drives. But some of the older Seagate drives are good. Like IDE drives.

Seagate Barracudas are better than WD Blues honestly.

Dunno what to say about high capacity ones though ( > 3TB ) .
