Thoughts on AMD

Dimetime35c

Zen and Arctic Islands will bring them back, they won't simply fail, if they had a couple of flops that does not mean everything they release will be a flop.

They don't have the money to put towards R&D for good products, simple as that. It would be a damn miracle if they could pull something out of their ass.

I'll stick to my AMD GPU's, color accuracy and compute performance over fancy tricks any day for me.

Fancy tricks?

From my standpoint, if they are to survive, they're going to need another company to buy them out.

Fancy tricks?

Cuda, Gameworks, color compression, and all the little bells and whistles Nvidia really pushed for Maxwell for sales.

BTW, if a company buys AMD the x86 agreement is pretty much fucked up. I think that's not even an option.

CUDA has been a part of NVIDIA's cards for a while. Not really a "fancy trick" anyways.

If im honest wouldn't look at an amd cpu, Intel is so much better in my opinion and requires alot less power! There gpus are good but My main complaint is power consumption as it can be limiting

Open CL Compute Pretty sure its damn slow :P

I'm pretty sure I was able to render a 60 seconds 4K video @ 50Mb/s videobitrate in 3 minutes instead of 30 minutes with my crappy CPU in Adobe Premiere Pro CC

People really like to circlejerk when it comes down to videoedting.. it's like they render a Hollywood film every single day.

Well yeah CPU vs GPU rendering is totally different, GPU's are always gonna be miles faster then any CPU set up.

But when it comes down to raw compute performance for something in Open CL AMD takes that crown and keeps running from Nvidia with it.

Yeah. Samsung would've picked them up FOR SURE, but Intel might pull the trigger and establish a monopoly.

Not that they want it, and they may reach another agreement but that's still quite the humongous risk there.

So AMD has also been around forever just like Intel, they are doing amazing with there APUs still and personally if I am going to buy a laptop it is going to have an APU in it if there is no dedicated GPU. Also think about how much money AMD has made off of the FX line, People are still buying them new today!

AMD made the processor for this sucker so if they go under (which I doubt the will any time soon) I will cry

I personally think AMD will not be gone for a long, long time. They would be bought by someone before they will ever disappear (patients). Recently I just bought a AMD Phenom II x6 1055T (Call me crazy) but I always wanted one when they first came out. Currently I have it paired with my EVGA GTX 670 to try and play some of the current and latest games on it to see how well it stack ups to my Intel Core i5 3570k. Surprisingly it has blown me away. GTA V I was able to crank up the setting a little higher and it was still smoother than my i5. Same with a few other games as well. Given I did pay $78 for this 2009 processor but it still kicks ass. It just shows that the older things is still currently good and you don't need the latest and greatest things just to play the current games. Evenyone thinks that if Zen fails, AMD will be no longer. I beg to differ. I will still buy Zen and other people will too since it will be priced competitively to Intel's CPUs'. No matter what  I will always love AMD.

The titan x and 295x2 perform about the same[.]

It is a dual GPU card. I wouldn't say they're necessarily comparable.

Gameworks isn't a "fancy trick", it's just a bunch of stuff that can make a game look better and doesn't require devs to make everything from scratch. It's not that different from TressFX.

Also AMD use colour compression now, too. It's how the 285/380 gets away with less vram and a smaller bus than the 280X, but has better memory performance. Better compression algorithms are always going to be at least as important as good hardware. That's how you end up having something as powerful as a 290X not even able to comprehensively beat a 970.

But Gamesworks as also cause laziness on the devs side.

But you have a point, besides the 290x is 3+ years old now and was ment to keep up with the 780ti, not even the 780 keeps up with the 970. The cards are just old.
