(Hopefully not repost, I quickly checked).

Knocking a drone out of the sky is sometimes possible using an invisible weapon—sound.

The vulnerability in some drones comes from a natural property of all objects—resonance. Take a wine glass: if a sound is created that matches the natural resonant frequency of the glass, the resulting effects could cause it to shatter.

The same principle applies to components inside drones. Researchers at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) in Daejon, South Korea, analyzed the effects of resonance on a crucial component of a drone, its gyroscope.

A gyroscope keeps a drone balanced, providing information on its tilt, orientation and rotation, allowing for micro-adjustments that keep it aloft. Hobbyist and some commercial drones use inexpensive gyroscopes that are designed as integrated circuit packages.

In some cases, the gyroscopes have been designed to have resonant frequencies that are above the audible spectrum, said Yongdae Kim, a professor in KAIST’s electrical engineering department. But others are still in the audible spectrum, making them vulnerable to interference from intentional sound noise.

Matching the resonant frequency of a gyroscope causes it to generate erroneous outputs, which have an effect on its flight.

In theory they should be able to shoot drones down while using LRAD 450XL 140 dB at the distance of 37.6 m. It was not tested yet however.

Wow. There is a lot of going on in the Drone world right now regarding its usability and whether people should be allowed to fly it where they want or not. Then there are situations where Drones can be really dangerous as they are getting in the way of real flying machines with a crew. I guess shooting them down with sound is a good idea but this can be probably also easily abused since a lot of people will have knowledge how to make device that could shoot Drones down from the sky now.

The most scary thing about it is that unless you see someone using such device you cant really prove that someone did it. You may not even realize at first what really happened until it is too late.

Well since not so long ago someone raised the issue that drones can be used to hack wifi networks just by hovering near the area of, let's say, a house, I actually saw a gap in the market for something like signal jammer in a area to prevent alot of such situations where you want to keep your privacy, safety, security, what ever - this would solve the issue.

Now you will say: what about those without malicious intent... my reply is I don't know the reply to that answer. Probably a signal that would advert someone that they are entering a radius of a house with a jammer.

It would be very hard to track a person who did this (if it works in practice), as the drone will look completely fine, and basically look like human error...

How so? I'm intrigued. Would this new way of using sound to stop drones, be safe and legal anyway?

Because with jammer you can disrupt communication for example. Do that while something important is happening (like medical assistance) and you can go to jail.

Yes, using sound is definitely safer than jammers. It will be also definitely legal.. the consequences of using it may not be legal however.

OR you can use a EMP... but thats none of my business

Assuming there is no helicopter nearby that is trying to stop forest from burning down to the ground and someone is filming it with a drone endangering the crew of the heli... yea, throw EMP at them! :D (simmilar to jammer situation).

How about some laws to regulate drones first before we try to shoot them down and have angry pilots go to court "because you shot my drone out of the sky".

All of this drone talk seems like a "shoot first, ask questions later" situation.

well, look at it this way...

my best friend, was for a while, into model RC airplanes.... where i live, there is laws stating that you cannot fly RC planes closer then 200m from ANY populated or inhabitated area. This is due to the risk of injury, incase oyu know, plane has a problem/stalls then hurtles towards the ground.

These laws are there to make sure people do NOT get a 8-15 pound piece of plastic and metal in their heads, because that CAN and have killed people.

Drones are often heavier then airplanes, cuz they have more engines to keep them afloat and do not rely on a huge wingspan for lift.... these things are also quite fast, and if they lose propulsion, say 100ft up in the air, the are deathtraps for anyone unfortunate enough to be below it.

These things can cause danger to bypassers, and as such SHOULD  be regulated by strict laws, and if said laws is broken, should lead to the user being fined and the drone being confiscated!!

The fun and enjoyment of some, should not come at the cost of others safety.
