Hacking Team: Spyware Can Remotely Control Pre-Android 5.0 Devices

Some of the "features" of RCSAndroid include the ability to:

  • Capture screenshots using the "screencap" command and framebuffer direct reading
  • Monitor clipboard content
  • Collect passwords for Wi-Fi networks and online accounts, including Skype, Facebook, Twitter, Google, WhatsApp, Mail, and LinkedIn
  • Record using the microphone
  • Collect SMS, MMS, and Gmail messages
  • Record location
  • Gather device information
  • Capture photos using the front and back cameras
  • Collect contacts and decode messages from IM accounts, including Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, Skype, Viber, Line, WeChat, Hangouts, Telegram, and BlackBerry Messenger
  • Capture real-time voice calls in any network or app by hooking into the "mediaserver" system service
 The system is comprised of the following components:
  • Penetration solutions, ways to get inside the device, either via SMS/email or a legitimate app
  • Low-level native code, advanced exploits and spy tools beyond Android's security framework
  • High-level Java agent – the app's malicious APK
  • Command-and-control (C&C) servers, used to remotely send/receive malicious commands.
RCSAndroid (AndroidOS_RCSAgent.HRX) has existed in the wild at least since 2012.

Go Apple. I'm kidding IOS8 sucks! But security wise (in terms of getting into the phone, no icloud stuff) they are the best. Unless they are secretly being given money by the NSA to spy on every device and have access through the camera.

My S Plus was stuck on Android 2.3.

Funny thing is I installed a lollipop ROM (Cyanogen) on it and it worked just fine.More than just fine actually, it was less laggy than before.

 

My S3 got stuck at Jelly Bean I think.

well I my phone for calls 95% of the time and 5% of the time use to play old nintendo games and it's almost never gets an internet connection and even then it's on secured wifi so I think I'm probably safe safe.

So, now that the source code for the exploits are out there, surely an update has been rushed out, patching all these vulnerabilities... r-right?

Google refused to patch a browser vulnerability in pre-4.4 Android. I doubt they will fix all of this. Even if they did, it would still take at least 3 months for the update to get to flagships.

Kit-Kat is pre-5.0 (like title claims), but the article says versions from 4.3 and older are affected.  Kit-Kat is 4.4.

Well that last part was the problem. Google had already replaced WebView (the program with the vulnerability you're referring to). So in that case the problem was to make the OEMs update their phones.

Google making a patch wouldn't really solve anything because the core issue was that OEMs didn't update their phones. It's kind of silly to expect Google to develop an update that OEMs need to install when the issue was that OEMs weren't installing updates.

 

Sucks for the end users though.

And 9/10 apps in both stores are shit and not worth downloading. You should only download the good ones so I don't quite get your point.

Hell, 2/5 websites on the Internet is probably affected by malware, and that's why you need common sense. Don't download Hot_Girl_Next_Door.apk and install it just like you wouldn't download and run Hot_Girl_Next_Door.exe.

That's true. My point was it's 2/5s of the top 100 apps (meaning they're really popular and used by tons of users).

Not when they're wrapped in a DIY tin-foil case that block any and all signal.. That actually does work. Only downside is that you have to return all calls instead of ever answering them.

 

(seriously, that does work for blocking reception. It has to be very thick though)
