Any point of having two optical drives in one machine?

When I bought my server with the order I bought a BD-RE in the mindset of "in case I may need one". At that moment the DVD-RAM drive in my workstation is still in perfect working state.

 

Now after I upgraded the workstation I got both DVD-RAM and BD-RE drives in my workstation. Is there any point keeping this configuration, or am I cluttering my already very small OEM chassis?

 

I do know that having two optical drives, with at least one of them being burner (or in my case, both,) allows me to make copies of optical drives relatively easily. However there aren't many optical discs floating around now...

I mean, you could clone disks from a disk in one drive to another. You could burn two disks at once, rip two CDs at once...

Indeed but the big question is in this current world with less and less optical discs floating around, is there any point keeping both, if any optical drives?

99% of people here will bash you for having one ODD, let alone two I myself have one external, since my case doesn't have any ODD slots, but I rarely use it, it is a Blu-ray drive, but like I say - better to have one and not need it, than need it and don't have one

I have 0 odd in my pc so I say no but I remember the good old days of disk burning setups where people would have a full front panel of drives just for mass burning cds

When I got my case, it came with three. Unfortunately, two were IDE drives, not SATA, so I couldn't use them. I only have one in the case at the moment. I think it's worth it to have one, for sure. (I have a lot of old CDs around that I am in the process of burning to my HDDs.)

It depends on the person. I personally have cut down to 1 and I'm fine.

I used to always use 2 optical bays cause I would often dupe discs from one drive to the other. It saved a lot of time over ripping to an iso swapping discs then writing back. Now that optical drives have gone by the way side, I don't do nearly as much of that so my next rig will likely just have the one (I need at least 1 to rip my music CD's to FLAC until retailers actually start selling FLAC, and to occasionally rip Blu-Rays that people gift to me).

I had 2 in my last PC, set up for different DVD regions. I don't bother now though, not least because my current case only has room for one ODD.

For most people a ODD is completely unnecessary, having more than one even more so. There are the exceptions where it's dependent on what the user needs are. For someone who rips alot of CDs or DVDs, having 2 or more is a godsend. If you regularly make ODD backups, burn multiple discs, or have to copy one disc to another, it can save time. I am sure there are other reasons, but they will be even more niche.
