Is downloading videos from YouTube piracy?

Giganizer300PRO

My friend downloads pirated games and movies and I don't, but he also downloads videos from YouTube and I want to know if it's ok or nor before I do it too. Even Linus once mentioned that they download their videos from YouTube when they need a clip from it.

It's rather easy, you just get a free program and you are ready to go, most of the times the program even has a converter built-in to it, so you can convert your new Taylor Swift song right away and then put it in your phone.

So the real question here is; Is it piracy?

I mean, you're getting content, sometimes content that is otherwise not free for free.

That's because you have a feature to download your own videos off YouTube. No need for a special website for that.

If you redistribute I guess it could be seen as pirating (but it really depends on the laws where you live)

only when you upload it somewhere else, because youtube literally has a offline mode where it downloads the video, so no, downloading youtube videos is NOT a piracy as long as you don't make money of it or upload it on different platform.

you download via 3rd party applications, which is against youtube policies.

Offline mode is still bound to the youtube client, so Google still has some control.

^this is what I was going to say. It seems sensible. So long as the original downloading counts towards the content creators advert. revenue.

Thoughts @LinusTech, @nicklmg, @Slick?

(although I will say, it would be more profitable for them if we could just buy the LinusTechTips DVD series....that doesn't exist.... :( )

This probably only extends to their own app and any other form of downloading wouldn'tbe allowed

He owns the videos, so in that case no.

But if you downloaded say Jurassic World or Justin Biebers latest ablum I think that counts as piracy

There are full movies on TPB, doesn't make that legal

Some of you say it's piracy some of you say you can do it, but only for personal use, some of you have focused on the mobile app's offline mode...

I guess no one knows better than YouTube itself so I posted a question on the YouTube forum, we'll see if they respond and what they say.

read between the lines, if you can download videos on mobile and watch it later, then you can download it on your PC and watch it later, so its not Piracy

Not necessarily. On mobile, the app lets you download them, but on PC you have to use 3rd party software.

I just got an answer from YouTube:

The only way to download videos within policy is if there is a download button available, inside YouTube.

So I guess that's it? Kinda...

I wonder if they can tell when someone downloads a video tho...

Not necessarily. On mobile, the app lets you download them, but on PC you have to use 3rd party software.

your question was whether downloading is illegal not the tools used is legal or not. so no, its not piracy to download a something that's already free. you can download a free to play game on pirate bay, doesn't mean its piracy, its an another mode of file distribution.
