They better find a way, they aren't going to fit a 300w capable cooler in 3cm² ...

Why would the cooler have to fit in a 3cm2 area?

The super small gtx 960 pcbs seem to be doing fine with over hanging coolers

Yes this is a totally different monster, but I'm sure they will find a way to effectively deal with temperatures this time around.

Im guessing you're more worried about card integrity, drooping etc.

As with anything that requires game developers to not be lazy, I wont hold my breath. I just hope AMD provides good drivers at game releases, much like they did with GTA5, and none of this "GameWorks held us back..." bullshit.

I think GTA5 was the only recent big game that did their release right, which is probably the reason why so many delays were made. As for the GameWorks comment, I'm not even sure if we had a Nvidia sponsored game recently that hasn't had some sort of problem. Since Watchdogs, we've seen a lot of controversies and problems arising in performance and whatnot. We can look at Project Cars, and Nvidia cards had problems with wet scenes at first. Witcher 3 has hairworks, which was that one small feature that crippled a lot of card's performances until workarounds were made (which realistically should've just been displayed within the options menu). I have a hard time blaming AMD or Nvidia for anything, when games show that devs which either don't provide us with much options or don't optimize in the first place or provide us with a broken game on release. Seems like this is what the game industry has turned into unfortunately. I'm not saying that AMD sponsored games are any better, but the entire game industry is just like this now.

I think he's just assuming that:

A.) AMD's aiming for 95C again, and

B.) Waterblock surface area makes a significant difference

A is probably wrong, and B is just altogether wrong because a waterblock isn't designed to efficiently radiate heat into the air.

@dragosudeki was replying to my post, in which I was replying to someone else who suggested AMD might use extended PCBs for the air-cooled Fury variants. I simply stated that it wouldn't necessarily be required, but it might help to better dissipate the heat being produced by spreading out the components (GPU die and VRM array) on the air-cooled cards.

With a waterblock, they can pack the components tightly without any heat issues as the water takes that heat away much more efficiently.

Extending the PCB would do absolutely nothing. Just stop. Waterblocks are made to transfer heat to the WATER, not the air. Please, try to actually know what you're talking about before you start talking.

I think they were referring to the air-cooled cards, not the watercooled. Take it easy.

The 960 also has less than half the TDP and a much smaller VRM array to deal with. ;)

More or less. Have been thinking about upgrading to the 980Ti or Fury (which ever provides the best performance/dollar), but my wife lost her job a month ago so we don't really have any extra $ to throw around right now. :(

S'ok, just water-cooled my 290 and will stick with that for another year. It still maxes out just about everything anyways and I'm quite happy with it's performance. Will wait and see what AMD and Nvidia bring to the table in the next generation. ;)

Yep, I agree. It's totally possible there will be short PCB air-cooled Fury's. Should be plenty of room for all those VRMs. ;)

That's because it has a full water block. No fan needed on the card.

Because Nvidia can do no wrong and AMD can do no right. Didn't you get the memo? :P

So you also add the rest of the cards heat. It will probably do fine... I hope

yeah, but the can extend the pcb, or let partners like asus do it.

MSI would probably make a lightning edition. More than half the card dedicated to vrms...

So you also add the rest of the cards heat. It will probably do fine... I hope

All the components of the card that product heat are cooled by water. So the GPU/HBM die itself and the VRMs.

MSI would probably make a lightning edition. More than half the card dedicated to vrms...

...and quadruple 8-pin PCIe connectors. :P

All the components of the card that product heat are cooled by water. So the GPU/HBM die itself and the VRMs.

...and quadruple 8-pin PCIe connectors. :P

that would be one hell of a card

Lets all ripperoni in pepperoni

I get the feeling that some people here were traumatized by reference 290X's and now think that you'd need LN2 to properly cool Fiji. Sheesh.

Saddly, that is where much of the 290/x heater jokes stem from, despite all the other air cooled 290/x's on the market that perform great and run just as cool or cooler than their competing Nvidia cards (mainly 780/Ti). But... you know... Nvidia cards are perfect and AMD's are flawed. Facts be damned! lol. :P

CoolaxGaming and I were just joking if MSI made a stupidly overpowered Lightning edition Fiji. Not that we thought Fiji would be a hot running card. ;)

Just saw this posted on OC3D facebook page as well. Not that it's anything new, but nice to see the marketing direction they've taken. To all those people touting that 4GB vram isn't enough for 4K and it will be the death of this card: AMD appear to putting ALL the emphasis on 4K with the marketing direction, so having "only" 4GB of vram appears to be a non-issue.

EDIT: Clarity.

when were we back to the old myth of more vram means faster

The Fury can be as hot as the core of this planet, I just need it to exist. I need a very capable single card solution, tired of CF/SLI, and so far Nvidia is offering something outrageously good for a not so outrageous price. AMD has diddly squat and consumers don't respond well to not seeing new things, regardless of how enthusiasts purchase things.

Enthusiasts are okay going back a generation, like you can with the 290X and still get a great performing card. Normal consumers? No. New product speaks volumes for them.

Doesn't matter that AMD is rebadging the 200 series. It matters that they simply have new, marketable product to show for it. AMD can worry about making brand new chips once they actually have proper money for that.

A Fury thread doesn't go by without someone complaining about the 4GB of vram, all the while having no real world experience with Fiji.

Man that's a small card...

I hope they make ones with full sized coolers on top of that small pcb.

the air cooled versions will maybe have a longer pcb or the air cooler heatsinks might just over hang the pcb
