well if a 980ti is 95% as good as a titan x, do you think 100% or 190% is more?

A single reference 980ti when overclocked can beat the Titan X.... so yeah two will wreck it.

I don't know about 6 years time but SLI 980ti is currently the best option as of right now. If DX12 actually improves multi-GPU setups then you could add a third later on if it is viable.

Don't waste your money on a Titan X. It's such a waste. I'm very happy that I waited an extra week for Ti benches to come out. I saved $350 dollars for 95-97% of the performance and have some left over for more parts and games.

Nope the 980 ti preforms the same. Plus it overclocks better. 980 ti SLI hands down. It will obliterate the Titan X

There are pros and cons to each.   If you want to have a good GPU for more than 2 years I'd take a gamble on the Titan X if you plan to SLI later.  Yes the 980Ti has similar performance and can be overclocked to beat the Titan X.  Also they are correct that 2 980Ti (surprised Nvidia called it that, since it is GM200 vs GM204) will smoke a Titan.  However it may be that in 2 years games / editing may require more than 6 GB of Vram depending on resolution. The 980ti is not a new card/chip Nvidia invented to be better than the Titan X.  It is a chip that was defective and could not be a Titan X (full chip) from what I understand reading these forums.  Nvidia has to sell those chips somehow.  2 years ago I bought a (single) 780 thinking the same , (90 % of Titan performance, done deal,  also was $650 back then on launch day).  Fast forward to last November.  Was thinking of SLI on the 780 as I could buy one used much cheaper and thinking I could beat the new cards coming out.  Guess what.  I was limited by VRAM since it is mirrored.   I bought a Titan X for those reasons.  Some will argue against me but I could afford it without putting it on a credit card and I'm happy to have it.  I've never overclocked video cards and have had problems from overclocked cards from the manufacturer.

im just gonna stick with titan x for the fact of it will outlast and will be less of a hassle if even with dx12 isnt all that and have limitations, with titan x it just be a peace of mind knowing i have the power to keep up with games for years to come. And if i get 2 ill have more then 980ti's will be capable of 24 vs 12 so ehh itll be more expensive but will last longer.
