This is how much "Hairworks" hampers performance.

MegaDave91

At 4K with a 900 series (Titan X) card, in particular.

"Hairworks" enabled: 48fps

"Hairworks" disabled: 64fps

In conclusion; leave the feature off. The performance decrease is not worth the added realism of hair. To be honest, it's not a whole hell of a lot better anyway.

The "hair" in the game renders it a 8xx msaa. Correct me if i'm wrong.

What a joke...

The difference is negligible. Especially when you factor in a 20 fps decrease.

Lower the settings on it so it's not as impacting but still looks the same...

Go to a more intensive scene, for example where your fighting an animal covered in hair.

16fps decrease is not enough for you? :P Or do you want to see how hard it really tanks? I haven't really fought many furry animals yet.

Its a more accurate indicator.

Maybe

Standing in a static position and enabling/disabling the feature is a quicker/dirtier way to measure it.

hairworks adds hair physics. easiest to see when displaying the gryphon trophy on your horse. the hair flows fluidly as you ride. not worth a huge decrease. with my 970 i can keep it around 50-60 fps at 1080p with it on, but it stutters pretty badly during the dips.

My rig:
CPU: i5 4690k 24/7 @4.4ghz (1.165v) Max 4.7ghz (1.325v) COOLER: NZXT Kraken X61 MOBO: Asus Z97-A   RAM: 16GB Crucial Ballistix Tactical   GPU: EVGA GTX 970 SSC   PSU: EVGA GS 650W   CASE: NZXT Phantom 530 HDD: WD Caviar Blue 1TB + WD Black 2TB

outside, in combat, hairworks is 110%  worth it - especially with that gryphon head strapped to roach. fighting mobs with hair on them.

inside, with no wind, hairworks looks buggy as fek...

Its good to have the option to enable it, but I wish there was a "low" and "high" setting that ran with reduced tessellation and MSAA so the impact wasn't so high... I drop as much as 30 fps from it if Geralts head gets too close to the camera

The gimick is strong, too strong....:P but I suppose 4K is exceptionally taxing on most GPU's but 20fps is pretty heffty price to pay for flashy hair.

I turned the HairworksAA to 4xAA instead of 8xAA (2xAA is great performance wise, but it shimmers) and also did the AMD "Create Witcher 3.exe Profile" for Reducing Tesselation multi's to 8x or 16x and it works very well reducing the drops even further.

Pity Project Cars does not get improved the same way...

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

Didn't see that coming, simulated hair looking bad in games. It's like TressFX in tomb raider, but way heavier and slightly less shitty looking.

What a joke...

It's mainly in motion that it makes a difference.

Yeah turn hairworksAA down to 4xAA and if using an AMD card, make a profile for W3 and tesselation multiplier reductions to 16x, and then turn some decal values/draw distance/shadow values up again :)
