i use 7zip, because i like the way it handles .tar.gz and similar file formats.

AND it doesnt have a nag screen to buy the full version.

(the built in benchmark is a bonus as well)

I use both 7Zip and WinRAR.

And your poll also needs a PotatoZIP or PotatoRAR options to be a genuine LTT poll.

7zip. It's free. Open Source and doesn't annoy me asking to buy the software after 30 days. Also I find that it compresses stuff better than both winrar and winzip. (as in, smaller file size)

winrar and winzip require you to pay for the full version. 7zip handles everything for free,

I just installed it, it looks ok but it seems to have problems opening files whose filenames have weird characters, if a file shows "???" in its name it wont open it.

My WinRAR says it expired or that I have to get some license and all that stuff. But it still works. How is that?

P.S. Haven't looked really much into it cause of my work sched. So, sorry if I'm asking a dumb question.  :P

I want to build a rig, but I'm not a gamer.

7Zip is my go to, it's as simple and streamline as it can get.

I use PowerArchiver. Nice interface, easy to use, powerful, opens anything you can think of.

But not free.

All mentioned ones, looks like they come form a Windows 95 days.. untouched.

I'd have to look into it.. but I'm fairly certain 7zip doesn't do any sort of different compression on zip files than any other zip implementation...

WinRAR just cause I tried it first, liked the way it worked, learned it, and can't be bothered to try the others when I'm happy with WinRAR

It actually has quite a few different types of compression methods for zip files.

I have to agree with that, but 7zip recently had an update-albeit a beta, and pretty much everything can be done from the context menu.
