The titan x doesn't perform as good as the GTX 980SLI so you should definitely go with the 980SLI. The gtx 980SLI has better performance than the 970 sli too. So the best choice in my opinion is GTX 980SLI. Stable framerates and good for playing at higher resolutions

The best card period is the best card you can afford (within reason (obviously excluding things like Titan X)). If you can afford a 980, it will be better than a 970 or 290X. If you can't, then the 970 or 290X will be the next best options.

I would probably suggest a GTX 970 or R9-290 minimum, if you're planning on running brand new heavy games at high settings.

i7 not perfectly stable at 4.4.. #firstworldproblems

OP said "best" not "best for the money" so 970 shouldn't even be mentioned.

for the money an amd r9 290/290x or a gtx 970. these are the best bang for the buck for 1440p without needing to sacrifice graphics.

My rig:
CPU: i5 4690k 24/7 @4.4ghz (1.165v) Max 4.7ghz (1.325v) COOLER: NZXT Kraken X61 MOBO: Asus Z97-A   RAM: 16GB Crucial Ballistix Tactical   GPU: EVGA GTX 970 SSC   PSU: EVGA GS 650W   CASE: NZXT Phantom 530 HDD: WD Caviar Blue 1TB + WD Black 2TB

But can they run turbo tax?

sadly turbo tax isn't well optimized so it only runs at 1439 fps give or take on those cards.

sli 970s is extremely overkill for 1440p a single 970 gives a great experience at 1440p

Well he also mentioned that SLI is fine, so why the hell do you recommend titan X while 980 SLI performs A LOT better?

@ OP, trust me a single 980 will do just fine.

while a 980 would do fine, if the op doesn't want to spend as much money a 970 will do 60 fps 1440p ultra just fine too.

I wouldn't say it's unreasonable overkill, personally. At 1440p a lone Titan X will usually ensure you're reaching 60–80 FPS in most games, so you can be confident you're not going to have to compromise on visual quality. But I think I'd go with a 970 or 980, personally.

The Titan X is in kind of a weird place where it's probably more than you need for 1440p, but a lone Titan X cannot ensure 60 FPS in all new games at 4K.
