NASA's Accidental Warp Field

the only really cool thing to come out of it was the possibility of a warp bubble.  The speeds alone will kill life during acceleration or deceleration (take your pick), but a warp bubble bypasses a need for some kind of inertial dampener. Really, almost every other fictional technology from star trek has been invented already (the most recent being aluminum based glass), so now its just teleportation, phasers, androids and warp speed that's left...

 

Speeds won't do anything but acceleration can, yeah, but these drives excel at incredibly high specific impulse, but very low thrust.  Whereas chemical rockets are the Hummer Limos of Space, they're out of fuel real quick.  Ion drives and these experimental drives are more like the Golf Carts of Space, you can't accelerate or decelerate very fast (thus no harmful effects on a passenger), but let that acceleration run for a long time and you can pick up fantastic speeds.  Of course there are the other hazards of high speed/interstellar travel.  Distances are still maddening, radiation/cosmic rays, or your craft hitting any kind of debris at extreme velocities (near C even a grain of sand hitting a ship would be like a tactical nuke).

 

We're working on teleportation!  That'll be a while though.  Phasers we can do, directed energy weapons no problem, already have those.  Androids... okay we're still working on robots but that's coming along.  Replicators!  Might be a while, but 3D printers are coming along well and serve a similar purpose.  We're getting there, we're getting there!

 

If these new drives that don't require propellant pan out, that does have some really incredible applications for future space probes, no?  Even robotic interstellar probes, possibly.  For instance, could we not slap these EmDrives on a robot probe, load it up with solar panels, and launch it further in-system to let the EmDrive pick up incredible speeds before flinging it towards Alpha Centauri or Bernard's Star or something?  Or heck even just say out into the Oort Cloud.  I'm probably ignoring some conservation of momentum in my thoughts here, pardon my lack of physics degree.  I guess the probe would have to burn fuel to correct a stable orbit closer to the Sun as its speed built up, which might nullify the gains.  I guess you could apply a similar principle without the speed buildup by letting these drives run for decades on huge RTGs.

I have a much longer response for later, am rushing to get homework done, but I have a question.

 

Has that been tested, with the source of light and source of whatever else, moving counter to earths momentum, so that it could be said that the source of light, and source the projectile, are "stationary"?

There are many tests done in respect to this property (called Special Relativity if you have not read my previous citations yet). Take a read at this; it scratches the surface on the question you ask, but it is still pretty long-winded:

There are two things you need to keep in mind about this matter:

 

First, many of the scientific tools that many of us take for granted is highly reliant on the theories from Newton and Einstein to function at all. This ranges from astronomical studies and equipment, nuclear physics, electronics, and even the production of cars. As a matter of fact, it was Albert Einstein himself who accelerated the study of nuclear physics to such a degree that we have today (with the help of the cold war, of course).

 

Second, this is based on scientific theory, which while it is not infallible, it is not easy (at all) to disprove. A theory is the the most plausible case scenario of what is happening in the world around us, and provides some metrics of measurement to an increasing level of precision. Each time that a theory, or part of it, is disproved and replaced by a modern substitute, these measurements get more and more accurate. Einstein made his theories by poking holes in Newtonian Mechanics, and he has admitted, multiple times, that there will come a point that his documents will be proven completely wrong. There are even modern theories to fix logical holes in Einstein's counterpart. However, the amount of research, documentation, and testing required to disprove or build a thesis is beyond what most people can accomplish.

 

All in all, a scientific theory is not something that you replace one over another and repeat. It is a very wide and complex "scientific hierarchy"; there are at least two theories to fix small-scale errors in every parent theory.

Hm... very cool stuff. What I want to know is why C is the constant C. What made light decide that C was the speed that it would travel at. No more no less.

C in constant is the highest speed light can achieve in a optimal(vacuum) envoirment, C is the simple way it is stated( E=MxC square ) we assume that this is the highest speed possible since there are/where no correct measurements where C lies higher, altough its actaully pretty hard to explain(mostly since im not english and thus dont know certain words) because light is a particle and wave(just as x-ray's, radio wave's etc) at the same time allowing it too have the advantage of the wave principle when it comes down too speed and spreading, but also keeping particle charasterics, like being affected when measured(speed or location, see schrodinger's cat)

The best way to put it(IMO) we don't know why and how yet, hell even astrophysics encounterd a problem a while back when they found black holes which where heavier then the whole known universe and broke the space/time laws.

We are getting there, but a truelly good understanding and explanation iare quite far away.

Good insight. I've been reading up on other finding such as black holes emitting energy (hawking radiation) which is odd because how could could a black hole (which even light cannot escape from) emit information? Of course this stuff is still be debating but it has been observed. Maybe one day it'll all be explained.

Ahh the black hole thingy, yeah that is very tricky, if im not mistaken black holes should dissappear overtime in a space time singularity, which means they go form nothing, too nothing, which means that all the matter/mass has to go somewhere, it is found that black holes send out information in the form of radio waves/signals and quasars, which fire out all the information taken in. But that is a dangerous thing to talk about, since they just can't be sure about it due to distance and background noise form the universe it's self.

Also, i would recommand watching "the theory of everything" which gives not only a insight of Dr hawking's life, but also the idea behind his theory in and pretty understandable way.
