Experiences with non-techies

Today my sister came into my room to hang out with me for a bit while I was re-assembling my PC (took it apart to fit it to a case I am custom buidling). She was pointing at the graphics card trying to find the right word for a few seconds.... she ended up with screeninator

To be fair, "screeninator" sounds more fun than "graphics card".

This is true. I think we should all start calling graphics cards "screeninator" casually around the forums

I've got a story which isn't related to computers in anyway but its funny anyway. So I was working in B&Q (A retail hardware store in the UK) when this fairly young man comes up to the front desk complaining that the socket we had sold him was defective. I asked him what was wrong with it and he replied "There's no power coming out of it", slightly confused I asked him if he had connected all the wires up correctly to which he replied "You have to connect wires up to it??", So it turns out he had bought this socket, taken it home, mounted it on the wall where he wanted it, expecting power to come out of it without connecting any wires to the socket.

 

I have absolutely no idea how that man has made it this far in life, anyway i politely inform him that in order to get power out of this socket it must be connected to the mains and that was the end of that.

yes my screeninator is a asus strix gtx 970

my powermathingy is a EVGA supernova 650 GS

my little stickaminator is Hyperx Fury 16Gb (2x8)

Procesrthingy is Intel i7 4790K

and that big thingy that everything attaches to is a msi z97s SLI krait edition

my screeninator is a asus gforce 750 ti  as well... i think... i actually forgot the name of it i know its a 750 ti just the rest of the name escapes me

Well at least she figured out it was related to producing visuals for the screen.  That's a hell of a lot better than a lot of the people we've all had the displeasure of knowing exist

I guess I was wrong about it just being computers that are a mystery to people; apparently no one has any clue how the most basic things we use every day work, or any knowledge of physics or common sense whatsoever.  Honestly I don't know how these people manage to figure out they need to put gas in their car to make it work *facepalm*

so i now have a new spec list inspired by both that comment and pikmin. i realized while making it that pikmin has a habit of naming things in the same manner as that guys sister so lets all make up sciency sounding names that are still pretty far from what the real name is

When we were doing some stuff on the computer and it was time to shutdown the computer, while it was doing updates, the kids said to turn off the computer as we needed to leave. These kids literally don't know the computer is installing updates. I know. And only me in the class knows a damn thing about computers (the first time i used a computer was when i was 3.... it had Windows XP on it.) I went really quickly from thinking DOS was made in Batch and that the monitor model was the computer model to now. It only took 2-3 years.

I fixed it. Now we need a distribution method so we can infect the rest of LTT with this new method of spec listing  @BingoFishy

 

P.S. try TalkaMaGargle/Hearamagargle instead. The ma makes it sound better in my opinion

How much do you know about hardware? Could you/Have you build/t a computer, given the parts?

Just asking because the youngest people on this forum in general seem to be 11-12
