Experiences with non-techies

This isn't a specific "experience" per se but I've noticed in a couple places recently people referring to the storage on phones as "ROM" for some reason... really hope that doesn't catch on

my girlfriend refers to storage on a phone as data. like she says im running out of data on my phone she said to me once. my response was "well just be light on it for the rest of the month there are only a few days till the next month" being as tech illeterate as she is, she said okay and things where fine. then a week later when her billing period refreshed she asked me why it wasnt fixed yet. i told her to contact her provider is must be a mistake on their end or something im not entirely sure i can do anything for you. of course after contacting the provider they assured her her data was renewed and that nothing was wrong. so the next morning she says that her data was renewed but her phone still doesnt show it. i finnaly told her to give me her phone so i can look at it. turns out data meant the god damned storage! i had to explain to her what data means in terms of smart phones, then i had to explain that she had too much shit on the phone. of course she never deleted anything and to this day still refers to storage as data. i dont even know why anymore but i just get really irritated whenever she says data. just the word sets me off.

so its safe to say i offically have a trigger. i can now use the excuse "YOUR TRIGGERING ME!!!!!"

yeah OK that's worse xD I guess I'd prefer people to call it ROM to data...

I don't know how, but SonicWALL can also detect/block proxies, so you basically get like 15 mins of a proxy before you need a new one.

like i said and this is only good if the damned box doesnt filter it. you can always try for ssh sessions or what i do i just remote into my home computer through chromes remote access program and use that so im not affected by the sonic wall

i had to stop by my mothers hospital to give her something and while i was there i took a look at her computer since she was complaining it was so slow. (only logs, and event viewer no patient data. also im hippa certified). the machine was an older hp with pretty good specs, i5 2300 4 gigs of ram 1 tb hd. then looking at what was happening.

oh my god

so two companys decided what got installed onto the computer one was some firm the hospital hired out and they installed an anti-virus on all the computers and then the hospital installed their own anti-virus on the computer, the cpu usage was always pinned at 85% and the ram usage was almost always at 3 gigs used by the system. it was a war zone.

i sat back in awe and said to my mother " im sorry but this is not my war " then i left as silently as i had come in the only sound the sounds of the wounded conversing with their family and friends echoing down the hall.

i forgot to give her her mug of tea in the end.

as far as i know she is still in her chair waiting for her programs to load while the war rages on.

hot damn this world so doomed

way back when i was building pc's to make money, i once encountered this one guy who knew nothing about computers. i custom built a pc for him, delivered it to his house, spent over 4 hours explaining to him all the ins and outs about the pc.

8 p.m (2hours after leaving his place) - he calls asking me how to hook up all the cables because he moved it into his room(why? because he wanted to search porn in private, lol)

10 p.m. call again asking me what his password was, he setup his own password i never knew what it was but he asked me anyway . OMG, drive back to his house , hack his password  and spend time convincing him, that its not that easy to do, i just knew how to do it.

2  a.m - final straw, call asking "how do i turn off AOL(yes , Aol, it was that long ago) " , my answer i jokingly said, "pull the plug from the outlet" and he did

next day, another 2 hours explaining everything again, got $20 gas for it but not worth the $1000000 headache.

gave up building pc's for the next 10 years for anyone but myself, until i built one for a relative. but thank god for google and youtube the easy replacement tech support i didnt have to go though the same headache

How about Windows 10 as a non-techie???

Just decided to play a bit of GTA5, so as always I plug my wireless 360 controller to be sure it's fully charged so I can unplug it later.

As soon as I did I get a popup ... Windows is installing the plug&play drivers ... WTF??? This Windows install is the same since I did a clean install last year, the Wireless and Plug&Play drivers were installed the same day of that install, I haven't changed USB port AND when I played 2 days ago, it was all fine (meaning no install popup)!

WTF Windows???

Like I said, no updates, not even drivers update, I do have updates notifications under Windows Update but I downloaded GTA last week and went over my bandwidth limit (I should have been more careful), so I'm offline with the PC and browse on my phone using data, that's until Monday.

It should be noted that my Windows installation seems to have problems, I can't get the 1511 build update to install. I'll eventually reinstall Win 10, but not until I can get my bandwidth back!

I've noticed Windows has been really stupid about drivers since XP at least (maybe sooner idk).  You can plug in a generic USB flash drive, and it will install drivers (itself a "should be" unnecessary task), sometimes taking several minutes, but then if you plug it in again, it will be fine unless you plug it into a different USB port - then it needs to install drivers again *facepalm*

Drivers are programs, usually written in C, running with the same system privileges as the kernel itself does. I have no idea if plugging in several of the same device will make Windows run several instances if these programs in parallel, but it would explain why it has to "re-install" every time (it's actually launching these programs often referred to as drivers).

That's not how it works, we're talking about Windows installing the drivers for the same device when it's plugged into a different USB port.

It's actually not Windows fault but USB device's manufacturer. USB device can be given a USB serial number, with such device Windows will recognize the device and will not reinstall the driver.

My specific problem is that I used the charger 2 days ago and I didn't change the USB port since, yet it reinstalled the drivers.

But it should recognize a device it's seen before, even if it's in a different port.  Is that really so much to ask!? :P
