I don't know if there's a post limit here or whatever, but this is another story I wanted to share.

Guy came in with a custom built desktop that wouldn't even power on. His two teenage kids were with him and we were all making smalltalk while diagnosing the problem. Did the usual. Firstly checked to make sure the case front panel was properly plugged into the board. No errors there. Maybe it's the PSU? Nope, that's good. Maybe the video card is causing a problem? Nope, still won't power on even with the GPU out.

Hmmm...at this point I'm beginning to think they just forgot to install the risers and destroyed the motherboard. To my surprise, nope. Those were in too. I couldn't figure this out. So decided to do a bench test. Took everything out and just hooked up the bare necessities. Still nothing.

At this point I don't know what else to check...I mean, it can't be the CPU, can it? Surely the CPU isn't bad, in all my time I've only seen a bad CPU once.

Went to pop out the CPU...and I saw something disturbing. The CPU itself was bent. Yes. Bent. There was a huge dent right down the die lid, like someone took it and tried to snap it in half. What the hell? I took the CPU out and the mating pins on the socket were all bent out of shape, well beyond simply bending them back.

Me: Okay. Who did this?
Him: Whoa, what happened there?
Me: Whoever installed this CPU did it very wrong and it is also the wrong one. It doesn't even match the socket of this motherboard.
Him: Well my son who picked out the parts and installed them is a computer expert! Are you sure?
Me: They call them zero-insertion force for a reason. This is not zero-insertion force. It looks like he took a sledgehammer to it to get it to fit. This CPU is destroyed, and you won't be able to return it. So you're out $350 on that.
Him: Are you sure?
Me: Yes. You may be able to send the board back if you just tell them you got it like that, but this CPU is beyond saving. Next time, just bring everything here and I will put it together for you.

About a week later he came back with replacement parts, and I installed it all for him and set everything up. Thank goodness. I never got to talk to the supposed "computer expert" son (he wasn't in the store the first time), but if I ever do meet him I think I'm gonna punch him.

i do. alot of older shit. im working on a network pro certification at this time and the course still uses them so they are required knowledge for our exams. the course im using is from err let me check i know it needs updated a bit. .... well the videos arent dated anymore. i could have sworn they where. all i know is we are getting updated content on all courses next year, at least i think. this is the service if anyone is curious http://www.testout.com/ i do this alongside highschool at a vocational school. so while i sure as hell dont have as much experience as most people here ive got at least a decent ammount of knowledge. next year im going to keep going even though i graduate this year, and i am trying to figure out which course to go with since i get to pick next year. my choices are windows server(which i dont think i need since to my knowledge linux is far more common for server operating systems but correct me if im wrong), CCNA, or security. im leaning twards cisco since i hear that is incredibly useful. either that or a grammar class since mine sucks.

hes right although you gotta switch it to caps and type in a weird way all lower case letters need to have shift held down since caps lock will let you do this.

its not a custom font within windows (if its 7 i dont remember the steps off the top of my head) on windows 10 you can go into settings>time&language>Regieon&language>add a language   i added the japanese language to my system. once you do that on your taskbar there will be the letters ENG click those to bring up a list of languages on the system, select japanese. once you do that click in a field that you can enter text and again in the task bar click the  A and make sure it changes to a i beleive it is hiragana character. that will set your keyboard to use hiragana katakana and kanji but to write in english with that weird font. you will want to hit caps lock and hold shift while typing. pressing the space bar will often bring up a list of possible text (since thats how you shorten things down to kanji or more relevant characters. you will want to hit enter if the cursor moves to the beginning of the word you typed. then you can hit space

sorry that was kinda a mess as an explanation but i hope it made some sense

Why do you have a CD elastic drive in your pocket? Is there a rampant amount of CD drive vandalism going at your school?

I'm glad there are lot of kids that are doing more with computers than just downloading apps on their phone like you. Stick around the forums more and try r/pcmr.

There's quite a few young extremely active users like me and @Dan Castellaneta. We definitely do more with PCs than apps. I program, use Arduino's, build PCs and more. Funny how you say phone. Instead of a phone I'm buying a ballin' PC xD

My mom came over this weekend for my daughter's birthday. we had a few activities and I went on Google map to print my mom's trip back home from where we would be later in the day.

*I open both screens and go on Google map and moved a few windows around because of some data transfer to and from my NAS I had in the background*

my mom see me move windows between the two screens and then asks "why do you have 2 computers?"

ME: "... what do you mean?" (I knew what she meant, I just wanted to make sure)

MOM: "The 2 screens, you have 2 PCs"

ME: "No, the 2 screens are connected to the same PC, look"

*proceeds to move my browser with Google map open from one screen to the other*

MOM: "You can have 2 screens on one computer?"

ME: "Welcome to 20 years ago mom!"

BTW, my mom is in her 60's and never had a job where she needed to use a computer, so I was not surprised by the question, I just thought it was funny!
