This story is from 1994 - I was working in a local computer shop at the time and a lady (very nice, polite) walked in and asked for help with her computer.  I honestly can't remember anymore what it was, needed more ram, or virus concerns, or something.  In any case, we did whatever she needed and sent her on her way.

 

Now remember, this is 1994, back when computers had physical power buttons, not these modern soft-switches ATX power supplies use.

 

She gets home about 45 min later, calls us, and says "my computer isn't working at all, my screen is blank".  I spend about 20 min trying everything on the phone with her to help (cables plugged in, monitor and computer turned on, etc.).  Finally I have to say, "I'm sorry, bring it back, we'll make it work".

 

30 min later she shows up, we plug it into the display test station on the floor (in front of her), turn it on, and of course it works perfectly.  She swears up and down that it didn't work at home.

 

So I turn it off, unplug everything, and say, "ok, no problem, please show me how you're plugging it in and turning it on, it might be something really simple".

 

So she does all that, plugs everything into the right places, turns the monitor on, then reaches down to the floor and flips the switch on the power strip.  At which point she says, "see, it doesn't work".  I then reach over and press the power button on the computer tower itself and it turns right on.

 

She says "you have to do that?".  She had never used the button on the computer, it had always been "on", she used her power strip to turn it on and off.

That wouldn't work today of course, with our soft power switches, but back in those days, well...  we all had to keep a straight face and send her on her way.  After she left, we must have laughed for 20 min.  Poor lady, honestly didn't know any better, but she was good from that point on

That is crazy slow. Ever since getting a SSD, I don't even bother hibernating my laptop because it is <10 seconds to boot from pressing the power button.

I don't really mind, I have an SSD, but haven't bothered to load an OS onto it

That is a great story.  I've always said, it seems like elderly people are divided wholly into two categories - the ones that ignored computers as they came into existence and thus now can barely use them at all (if at all), and the ones that got into it at the very beginning and now have ~50 years experience and probably now more than the vast majority of us  

 

sadly that seems to be a much smaller group though...

Well, I don't at least. Streaming it is so much easier and saves my last 200 GB left for games I'll buy in the future

54.75 seconds?! Jesus christ that's a long time (and also a timing so precise it makes me think it could be made up). 200GB of porn??

It displays the normal thing as you see in Windows 8.1, but it'll say at the end "for more information, see this code" or something like that.

Yeah 55 seconds on a 7200 RPM HDD. This would be unbearable with a 5400 RPM drive, holy shit. No, I don't have any porn on my computers. I have another 200 GB out of 1TB left on my HDD, and I would rather use that for space for games instead of using it for porn.

Well, non techies...

I can say this.

Almost EVERYONE in my school has no idea how a phone or a laptop works. I disassemble one, and they're all like "What's that?!"

"What does THAT do?!"

"Holy crap dude did you break that?!"

"No, I'm fixing it. This connects to this, etc. Gotta do this," and when I finish after getting their parts they refuse to pay. So no lights on for me if I was on my own. Not to mention they don't understand the cost of parts for certain phones.

Just google Samsung Galaxy S III Replacement LCD and you'll see EXACTLY what I mean.

 

They not only don't understand the cost it takes to repair, but also what a part needs to work. It's almost mind numbing unless it's that one girl across from you who just wants the phone fixed and asks no questions.

 

But needless to say, each of my peers has only the knowledge to use some of Windows.

I handed one a phone and said "If you think you know how to do it go ahead and do it."

It came back in half an hour when he broke the logic board.

It was a dead iPhone 4.

Nothing of value was lost.

I dont watch ''porn'' per say, however erotic RPGs such as all the fenoxo games and some light time on e621(furry shit. for your own good dont go there)  does happen. hang me.

 

But i just find it much easier to download through a filtered and secure setup with plenty of scanning than to leave the page open. just more peice of mind i guess.

AHEM* one of my friends and i STILL dont know why or how he was proud of it. but he was going on about how he needs to get a new phone because he filled his 128Gb iphone something something version i dont know what model. with porn. and he showed me RIGHT IN THE FUCKING LUNCH ROOM. but seriously how does one and why does one carry 128gb of porn on their person.... he bothers me alot sometimes... i also question my refering to him as a friend but oh well

i've always just typed = then / then another = it gets the point accross, although it would be nice to be able to have the symbol itself.
