Experiences with non-techies

oh god, so now not only are people being misled into thinking the whole computer is the CPU, but they're misidentifying other specific parts like the rear panel IO as CPU as well.  soon the HDD will be the CPU xD

According to one of my friends, the hdd is actually the mobo and the ODD is the cpu because theres a cable from the psu connecting them directly together.

My pc:

My server:

This is one I remember from a while back.  While not specifically computer tech, I think it'll still make some of you facepalm and some of you chuckle.

A family I know had their 20+ year old CRT TV finally die, and replaced it with a LCD/LED set, pretty much the only kind you can get anymore.  Within a week their five year old son broke the screen by running his hotwheels across it, something he apparently always did on the CRT set.  When the mother happened to be complaining about the "cheap" TV to me, I asked how it happened, and then told her LCD screens are typically more fragile and that she shouldn't let her son use it as a play pen.  Her response was "THEN HOW IS IT BETTER?"  I lost my temper a bit and said her husband's steel toed boots must be better shoes than her $1200 something or another because her son couldn't destroy the boots with his playing.

If you've only had CRT sets and are tech ignorant, and see people touching the screens on their smart phones all the time, I could understand thinking LCD screens were generally tougher.  But I don't understand why some people judge a product based on its performance in something well outside its intended purpose.

I remember when LCDs first came out, touching the screen was still a common thing because (although stupid) it was harmless on CRTs (still the common kind back then) due to being covered in thick glass, and so I guess people did it all the time.  They would jab their fingers into LCDs, seemingly oblivious to the psychedelic rainbows of agony the screen would create every time they did it.  I think it's interesting how it seems to be a much less common mistake these days, despite the massive prevalence of actual touchscreens - if anything, you would think people would have been conditioned to do it more, but I guess we should be happy about the one thing the masses seem to have picked up on correctly xD

Oh and similarly to that, during my teens when my <5 year old cousin comes to visit, and my uncle asks me to open up paint because he likes playing around on that ....

The last thing I used paint was was editing gay porn pictures ....

Luckily nothing came up. Phew.

well, I'm pretty sure paint opens to a blank page on every launch, but... doesn't it have a recently opened list or something?  It does these days....

Today, at school today, a teacher was stuck at the computer when the screen wasnt working. She went to the IT support for help. While she was out, i looked at the computer. The monitor power cable was not plugged in.

It will always be funny when these things happen but it also makes you wonder how things get like that?  Like, assuming the computer hasn't been just setup - as in, it's been there for a while and used, etc - why is some part of it unplugged all of a sudden one day?  I don't get why people wouldn't at least take a second to check the basics like that before calling for help, but I also don't get how these things happen in the first place...

I told my friend that i was thinking of adding a gpu to my pc.

He says Do you have enough storage?

Today i asked him why he said this. He told me that because an xbox is meant to have 500gb storage but only has 320gb useable.

Xbox doesnt even hve a dedicated gpu(i think)

Yes it does ;

I don't get how GPU = storage though ... either console or PC, it doesn't make any sense!

My dad has a "it just needs to work" mentality when it comes to tech. He is a techie(his knowledge is outdated, I had to explain to him that an i7 can fit in the same socket as an i5, he hasn't really paid much attention since he got his i7 920) so he knows what I'm talking about. I say to him that I'm considering a side panel window on my wood case and he says "There's no point, you'll go through a small stage when you want it to look good and then you'll get bored. I even have peanut shells in my case at the minute." He also says watercooling is stupid because it has a high chance of leaking and that overclocking gets no performance increase(He tried on an old AMD CPU, I haven't seen the system but it was probably on a stock cooler)

OK guys this has really been bugging me: how do you all say "ARM" (you know the mobile CPU company)

Is it "A-R-M" (like, say each letter), or "arm" (as in your arm)?

I've only ever heard the latter but on the NCIX channel he always says "a-r-m"

ARM is an acronym, so A-R-M.

Then what about "RAM"?  I've never heard anyone call it "r-a-m" just because it's an acronym ;)

I hadn't read your comment under the video when I watched it, hence why I got really confused when he said to "take out your CPU using the two screws", and goes to a shot of the computer with the cooling fan still attached. Had to come back to your comment and realised why he said that

Also, this video is so cringe worthy like omg
