An older guy I work with got really upset when he heard that Windows 10 spies on what programs you use, and thus was looking for alternatives for when Windows 7 is no longer supported.  I opted not to tell him that every current Microsoft OS collects more information than that, as well as his browser and his ISP.  About the only realistic recommendation one could give him, other than buying a Mac, is Linux.  He had several questions, one of which was if he could use Internet Explorer on Linux.  When I replied that you couldn't, he wanted to know how Linux could be better if it can't use IE.  I told him that there is a lot more than goes into determining whether a car is good or not than just whether it can use your favorite brand of tires.

And I know that you probably could run IE in Wine, but in the context of tech unsavvy person, it would just be easier to use another browser.

And I come to find out that IE just isn't his preferred browser, but it's the only browser he's ever used.  I certainly can understand sticking with what you're familiar with and like, but I don't get intentionally cutting yourself off from alternatives that could potentially benefit you more.  I'm kind of scared to ask which version of IE it is.  But I guess I shouldn't be surprised.  He's so entrenched in habit that, for example, he'll get the wrong coffee (and won't know it till he takes a drink) if someone changes the order of the (differently colored) coffee pots from what he's used to.

The last build I did, the LAN driver was not included with the MB, nor was it in the Win10 install media. I got it from Gigabyte using another machine then transferred it over. Win7 on a Skylake NUC was fun as well.

what @Norseman4 said, you would expect the drivers to be "included" somehow (unfortunately manufacturer CDs have disappeared), how else are you supposed to get network device drivers if Windows doesn't detect your network device? Something similar happened to me once and I had tech support tell me to go online when the problem was network related ...

Motherboard manufacturers should throw in a 500MB flash drive just for ethernet and/or wireless drivers. If you only have one machine and can't access another PC, this is a huge pain in the ass

They should seriously stop giving my sister new phones

She broke her iPhone for the FOURTH TIME, within half a year.

I refuse replacing the screen AGAIN.

The money spent on replacing the screen is starting to become more than a new phone, and she can't go 2 months without breaking it again.

Not sure if that fits the topic, but it's annoying anyways.

I don't know, but she really doesn't handle the thing with care.

She just tosses it around, slams it on the table...

It really doesn't surprise me. That's why they should NOT buy her a new phone until she has learned how to handle with phones.

Oh look, I accidentally dropped my phone into this trash compactor! And over this cliff!

How? Does she not have a phone case?

So she broke the case and then the phone! First I'm surprised that the PCBs aren't exposed yet, second did she just buy this cheap ass itty bitty bumper that does practically nothing?

This is another thing that I don't really get, yet it's so common.  I think people understand when you show them the room-filling computers of the 50's and explain that their smart phones are now many times more powerful than those beasts were, but it's like they can't make the jump to realizing that this process of improvement has been (and still is) ongoing, and thus not all computers function exactly the same!  Some are more or less powerful... look at the parts in them!

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

most people just think they get smaller and more to a computer rather than improved arch or layout. Watch a crimesow, they cause the general computer ignorance of the public
