Experiences with non-techies

About a month ago, my cousin has been wanting to get into pc gaming. Which is cool, he even had the money for a decent build. I talked to him about me building one for him that would cost around $650 and he agreed. But a couple weeks later I shit you not my cousin got a Zotac ZBOX Nano AD12. It had an AMD E2-1800 APU and a couple gigs of ram. He said "I didn't need that gaming computer you were gonna build me 'cause I got this one for cheap and it's for gaming". Good luck gaming on that. Not only that, but he even got an HP Stream 11 for some reason. Which left no money left for an actual gaming computer. Bravo cousin, Bravo.

So he bought two web browsing machines, nice.

No, "its for gaming", and the cheap is just bonus.

Not only that, but he's already gotten viruses, malware, and adware on both of those machines, which already run like crap even without the viruses.

I feel that way with my cousin. You are going to treat me like bs, go pay someone else to do it. Not my problem.

Anyways, my former friend (now a total prick) complained about a laptop (I think macbook pro 2008). Anyways, his dad GAVE it to him. Well it may suck ass, but it doesn't mean u have to be an ass about it and especially in his face. Tells you society is falling apart both in the tech space and just being nice to people.

I thought I had some money... Oh wait... I spent it all ;(

ANn of you denied your parents admin access when they want to get it on the custom PC YOU built?

I did this a few times and the thing is, they beg off me for tech support, and resort to using their crappy laptops instead of using the beast PC.

I have firmly told them this and they havent asked for it since (cos they cant work out a bloody smartphone to save their lives)

Any of you had this issue?

My mom still uses a 10-year old PC because she can't figure out how to turn on my dad's PC (wallmounted shenanigans)

Ever since I gave my dad my old PC he's learned a hell of a lot of cool things, both hardware and software (he's a Physics professor and he's fluent in ASM, Basic, C and Pascal. I'm proud of him and ashamed that I now hate all 4 of those). Hell, he's now working out his own tech problems *proud tear*

Anybody else's parents keep trying to buy Mac's/ Macbooks because they're "better"? Ive given up at this point

My dad got a 3GS back when they were relevant from his second workplace (electronics servicing). He couldn't figure it out so he passed it on to me. I used for about two weeks then put it back in its box. Bout a year ago he started using it before deciding Apple was crap and got himself a Windows Phone.

Mom on the other hand can barely operate a smart TV and all she knows about Apple is that it's 95% branding and design for a metric fuckload of money

I'm trying to get my dad to get a MacBook. Won't get as many viruses and for what he does it'll perform his needs (Office + web) better than any machine he'll buy.

Same with my dad. He still does his banking on our 8 year old POS laptop

I have 3 people in my school who are extreme non-techies

1) thinks that his "watercooled" (not really) iMac is better than a custom PC and he can if a 6TB HDD in it (i think not)

2) Another says that his terabyte is bigger than my terabyte (guy is also an Alienware worshipper so i am not surprised )

3) third guy thinks that his 2 year old "£1500" custom (not) samsung "gaming" laptop is better than my desktop becuase it has an i7 3610qm( mine has a six core i7) and that his GTX 675M is better than my 980 LOL. He justifies it by saying that his craptop is £300 more than my desktop

The same guy thinks that his i7 is better than mine due to it being "8 cores" and mine is "only 6". I tried to explain the concept of hyperthreading and that on his terms mine would technically be a "12 core"

All three just brushed me off like i was nothing

Our PC's are good in our school, with i5's and a GTX 755 (Which isnt that bad). But what I do hate is the "Dell Optiplex Workstation Grade PC's" which have a Core 2 Duo and a extremely low powered quadro. You can imagine low powered quadros in 2006. And then you have Core 2 Duos with no GPU everywhere else, and then i5 haswell ASUS laptops. Then you have the HP mini. Take 5 mins just to get the log in screens, and 15 mins to get through windows and 2 mins just to load 1 tab if chrome. Lags on Microsoft word, but if you have been on that mini before, its not to bad. Just goes to show how imbalanded the school is.

Also, I had my computer on sleep mode, and then I shocked the computer case and then it turned on. My friends started freaking out as if I killed someone. Now they think I am a sourcer or something.

LOL a sourcer. u mean sorcerer

I hate it when people are like "wow you really know how to use software ( they usually mean OSs)  Well ya know I just use common sense and context clues....the red x exits out of the program SUPRISE!!!

Or when they say, "How the hell did you do that?" When you just ALT+F4'd out of chrome and logged off... \

This also happened. And I did later correct myself saying the gpu is a 6570.

He thinks he knows a lot about computers...

Hey I see your strix was RMA'ed what was the issue with it?

Actually it is sitting in its box. :( And part of the vrms died. I had to wait for printer ink, then get the printer working then eventually get my brother to print out the paper I needed half a month later... And I am currently trying to find a box to ship it in instead of the original one since it specifically said I will not receive the original box back.

That blows....how could you tell it was the VRMs?

Well seeing one of the capacitors next to it when I took a flashlight and looked inbetween the cooler was bent out a little bit like it shouldn't be...

ANother day at Work Experience

well my uncle' colleague's desk was in a right mess

His computer was as well. Dust everywhere, and his PC was a mess in terms of his files

When me and the technician (awesome, happy-go-lucky guy) who keep up with the latest stuff proceeded to pick up his laptop dock, it was a sight to behold.

The whole desk underneath was filled with rotten coffee with the smell of manky milk.

Insults flew towards the employee with me and the techie laughing. He cleaned it up and the reason why he was there was to get a fancy new XPS Laptop (the one like Linus destroyed), because his 3 year old desktop "sucked".

My uncle and his team (this guy was one of his right-hand men) saw it, they wanted to upgrade to a dual core i5 laptop from their quad core i5 desktops, and their trusty laptops already had sandy-bridge i5s

And my uncle tells me computer fans are pointless and to quiet them down, i just need to remove them and fit a Dyson Venturi to my case. He says that i shouldnt "Lecture" him about fans and that airflow and static pressure are pointless.

The thing is that these guys work with lab hardware and Microsoft Office on a daily basis

EPIC facepalm on both occassions

All in a day's work for the student intern who is working for one of the world's largest oil companies

OH well that's a pretty good reason to assume that...I'd say another thing that annoys me is when people equate multiple monitors to multiple computers...why not follow the video cables and discover that oh look!  They all go into the same computer!!

So when i was at school i was talking to my friend (if you read my other posts here you know who i'm talking about) what GPU he had in his laptop. He said NVidia GeForce but doesn't remember the model. So i said ok how much VRAM does it have. He said 2MB. To which i responded that's not possible, you play Just Cause 2 and other games a low to medium settings at 40-50 FPS. He said SystemRequirementsLab said that. I facepalmed.... Now he's getting a new PC and he says that he's going to be happy that he's getting away from his 2MB GeForce GPU. I facepalmed again and left...
