Experiences with non-techies

So this happend to me yesterday

Since i don't have a decent monitor yet(17inch 1280x1024) I decided to hook my newly build PC to the TV in the living room.

I installed windows + drivers and did some testing.

Decided to load up battlefield 4 campaign to check if it was performing well (never had played BF4).

Then my mom entered the room and she was freaked out i connected my PC to the TV, she started shouting: "you will break our TV !" Playing that stupid game on my expensive TV ! That thing is not made for that !

Try to reason with her what didn't work out at all my ignorant brother said:"t the PC will blow up the TV"

So i gave up, just to avoid my mom damaging my PC ... (from her rage)

She didn't even know u could connect a PC to a TV at all.

Its sad that my parents don't support my computer hobby ... hope I'm sure that I'm not the only one out there

It's funny because my Dad will walk in on my builds/gaming/tech work and be like:

You're kidding right? YOU'RE DOIN IT WRONG.

I love having a techie Dad it's so good.

Git Gud.

I was on PCPartPicker once at school ( I'm a real rebel) showing my friends the PC I was going to make. All of a sudden, some nob turned around, looked at me and said 'just get a laptop, they're faster'. At that point, I left. If I didn't, I would've screamed in his uneducated, retarded face.

Sounds like something I'd do, but no one at my school knows a thing about computers... :(

I have 1 other friend who is gonna build a pc, and one who is getting a pre-built 'custom' pc (we always laugh at him). Apart from that, there's only 1 person I know who's built their own pc or even knows a lot about modern day computing.

The odd part is everyone at my school completely hates me, but the older people I hang out with get along just fine. Also the group of people I am friends with know a bit about them. Then one is running his own computer shop. Then again he is just quite a bit older of course.

It happens, I have about 4 friends in my age group and the rest have became the most ignorant people, then again my school shutdown so we had to move schools. A shame most people feel the need to change in different environments just so they can fit in. One of my best friends ended up having to move schools because of his step mom.. Long story and I really don't want to talk about it.

And yet they would have been alive in at least the mid 80s (or so, I'm not gonna ask or guess ages) when the TV was the monitor. That's where monitors came from anyway!

When people think that having a flash memory more full (of general files) makes it "heavy" and slower. Ugh

Wouldn't that defy physics?

...

I knew that guy that told me people thought computers were magic boxes was right.

What? You mean to tell me they....aren't? For all this time I thought you had to enter arcane incantations through the Key Board in order to create a spell that would let the Computer System display what you wanted, and if you did it wrong then your whole house would catch on fire. Damn. Oh, and that Mouse thing. Don't you have to wiggle it as some sort of bait or sacrifice for the Computer System to keep it happy?

Search this thread, we have already talked about data and weight change before.

The point that I'm trying to get across is that having actual files (media, documents, etc) doesn't generally make a big impact on performance. It's what you have installed and running. My HTC M8 is almost full (2.3gb left out of 64gb) and it still runs like new, I barely have any apps on it.

Oh that's what you meant...

That is a notion that applies for HDDs though.

I know, but I stated specifically flash memory.

If you are "in the know" you are aware of the differences between the two. If you are not, they're both the same, so same things should apply.

I am just trying to get into the head of an ordinary consumer here.

Facepalm

My 17 year old sister thought there was a computer underneath our imac and the imac was just a screen. We have had it since 2008.

Under the desk we just have a UPS.

This one has been mentioned a lot, but yesterday I showed my friend what I wanted to build on Part Picker. He said "Only 8 gigabytes of memory for a desktop? That's way too small of an amount." I then explained how memory is the same as RAM, and I had a 1 terabyte hard drive and 120 gigs of SSD storage.

Look at my shiny. The logo lights up

My mom thinks that OpenBVE is a scam designed to trick kids into playing it and installing malware on the system. I'm certainly confident that such a game would have a huge fan base, be featured at a TRANSIT MUSEUM, have a forum (bvestation.com/forums) and have a Wikipedia page.

I was talking to my friend, I said partitioning your drive is kind of like breaking it into two or more smaller drives. The next day I found out he had literally broken his 256gb Samsung ssd into two pieces. I was trying to make him a techie, but after that I just gave up.

OMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMG

I literally facepalmed in real life after reading this.

Sister story 1:

Me: Would you like me to swap out he 4GBs of RAM in your computer for 8? It should speed up your laptop a bit and I have it lying around.

My sister: No! I like my computer the way it is. I don't want you touching my computer.

Me: But It will be faster and I can just give it to you for free. ( have 16GBs in my laptop that I now only use for taking notes in school)

My sister: No! I don't want you to break my computer!

Sister story 2:

Me: You should get an external monitor. I have seen you have your phone sitting on top of your laptop when you are playing TF2 and it looks like it is kind of awkward.

My sister: I don't want a monitor. My laptop's screen is touch and the monitor isn't.

Me: But you could have multiple things open at once in larger windows and you will be better able to watch movies.

My sister: I don't want to be able to do more than one things at once.

Me: *Facepalms then walks away*

Sister story 3:

Me: Hey, when you get your new computer, can I dismantle your iMac? (see mah sig for the build log which will be updated soon, I promise)

My sister: NO YOU CAN NOT!

Me: Why? It's not like you are going to use it or anything.

My sister: We are going to throw it out.

Me: If you are just going to chuck it, then why the hell can't I dismantle it and use it for something?

My sister: It's my computer and I control what happens to it and I say that you can not have it.

*Arguement happens which causes my mom to step in*

My mom: What's the problem here?

My sister: Christopher (its the C in CtW) wants to dismantle my iMac after I get my new computer

My mom: Why can't he  do that.

My sister: Because we are going to throw it out instead.

Me: That is why I think I should get it. I think it is better to use it than to let get thrown away.

My mom: I don't see why he can't do this? Its not like you are going to use it any way. Why do you insist on throwing it away?

My sister: I don't want him to break it.

Me/My mom: Ok this dam Mac is being dismantled. That logic is retarded.

The irony in this story is that my sister is all about saving the environment. She will yell at me if I leave the water on while washing the dishes.

My sister is the sort of person who you will want to beat the shit out of after meeting, as shown by these stories.

My head hurts from the facedesk.

I urge you to make your sister read my comment .

To your sister: LISTEN TO YOUR BROTHER YOU IGNORANT GIRL!
