April Fools' 2015 - Rounding up

GoodBytes

Hello,

Important Note

This April Fools started in a bad note. We had rapidly growing flame wars and misunderstanding from users which made us take the decision to not have any April Fools news revealed on this forum section, and moved on the Off Topic section. You can read the announcement here: http://linustechtips.com/main/forum-13/announcement-22-april-fools-threads-only-allowed-in-off-topic-do-not-post-them-anywhere-else/

This does NOT allow anyone else to make an April Fools post on the News Topic.

If you have one, not covered and would like to add it, you can post it here, or PM me, and will be added (if it follows the forum CoC, of course)

However, we have decided for those who don't want to miss the any of the fun, to make a summary of all the big April Fool's jokes tech related in the internet. Hence this post.

Please note that we will monitor this section very closely. If any signs that we believe could create a flamewar of any kind, your post will be removed. You have been warned

Let's Get Started!

Who do you think has the best April Fools joke?

Hate time consuming cable management? No problem anymore – we are happy to announce our new Wireless Power Pro. The new power supply in our premium segment gets rid of all the connectors as it simply connects through wireless antennas – no need for 24 pin ATX connectors, P4 and P8 plugs, PCIe connectors, S-ATA and P-ATA plugs! Through a simple plug-in system cables are now redundant; reducing annoying clutter, increasing airflow and improving cooling in even the largest PC cases.

The multi-rail power supply features Active Clamp and Synchronous Rectifier (SR) technology, DC-to-DC voltage step-down for rock-solid power stability and minimal signal noise. Wireless Power Pro is equipped with a 135mm SilentWings® 3 fan with Fluid Dynamic Bearing featuring an advanced fan frame, an airflow-optimized fan blade, fluid-dynamic bearing with copper core and a high-quality 6-pole motor for less vibration and comes with a 3-year manufacturer's warranty.

The power supply is available in 1000, 850, 750, 650, 550, 450W – allowing the perfect fit for high resolution gaming and multimedia system. The new series will be available starting June.

We are sure you will love it!

CERN

Confirmation of the force:

light-sabre.jpg

Researchers at the Large Hadron Collider just recently started testing the accelerator for running at the higher energy of 13 TeV, and already they have found new insights into the fundamental structure of the universe. Though four fundamental forces – the strong force, the weak force, the electromagnetic force and gravity – have been well documented and confirmed in experiments over the years, CERN announced today the first unequivocal evidence for the Force. “Very impressive, this result is,” said a diminutive green spokesperson for the laboratory.

“The Force is what gives a particle physicist his powers,” said CERN theorist Ben Kenobi of the University of Mos Eisley, Tatooine. “It’s an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us; and penetrates us; it binds the galaxy together.”

Though researchers are as yet unsure what exactly causes the Force, students and professors at the laboratory have already started to harness its power. Practical applications so far include long-distance communication, influencing minds, and lifting heavy things out of swamps.

NVIDIA acquires Valve, announces Half-Life 3 release for 2016

NVIDIA has announced that it has acquired Valve for an undisclosed sum of money, securing the rights behind the digital distribution platform Steam, as well as original IP like Half-Life, Counter-Strike, Dota 2, and Left 4 Dead.

44358_23_nvidia-acquires-valve-announces

NVIDIA has announced that Half-life 3 will be released on the 3rd of March 2016, or 3/3/16. It will be released onto the Steam VR-powered HTC Vive headset, as well as the Oculus Rift. It'll be released onto Windows and Steam OS, with full support for DirectX 12. We are going to see full PhysX built into it with a next-generation physics engine within the Source 2 engine.

Sweclockers

A group of researchers at the Löwenbräu Institute in Munich has developed "Active Light Cancellation", also known as "Darksync".

The theory is quite like Active Noise Cancellation headphones. The screen emits light in the opposite part of the spectrum, which takes out the incoming light and creates a local dark.

N2szYdD.jpg

The effect is actually outstanding. Black gets totally black, as long as you sit where the screen radiates darkness.

ils7HSv.jpg

The first commercial screens with Active Light cancellation or Darksync expected to appear on the market in spring 2016, possibly in conjunction with the launch of GTA V PC / Windows.

*All quotes are translated from Swedish*

I believe that Darksync will become a massive success, especially for professionals that need color accuracy.

I'd really like to get a demo to check how dramatic the effect is, but just by looking at the pictures the effect is drastic.

Make a DOS OS for phones, and I'd actually pay for it. And its a shame Apple didn't release their Macbook yesterday, because then I wouldn't be able to think that they have stupid product designers.

Personally I like april fools jokes that actually are products/services you can use. So the google maps, with the actually playable pacman feature, and oneplus, with the real (I assume, since you could add it to cart) remote control quadcopter, are the top jokes for me.
