I sort of laser etched my window and it's awesome

jkraghify

Over the weekend I completely rebuilt my computer (and upgraded motherboard/cpu).

Because the MSI Krait just looked so damn sexy, I repainted my case from black/silver to White/Black. I also painted two of my ram heatsinks, all my wires, and my power/reset buttons.

Last thing I did today was take my new, shiny acrylic window down to the Mechanical Engineering shop and laser etched the Krait into the window... AND IT LOOKS AMAZING

Plus, I got to learn how to operate the laser etcher. I might be addicted to laser etching now...

Now all I need to do is put in some white LEDs! I might make my own strips though. My room mate and I are both modding our PCs and we want to make our own LED strips

Wouldn't I have to put a UV light in?

Wait.. a UV light in a black and white build... that could look really nice :D

How was the etching/engraving process?

My friend took a time lapse of the process on his Galaxy s5 but he's asleep. I might post it tomorrow.

Overall, the etching process took a bit more than an hour. That includes setup time and figuring out how to use it (On my first try I cut straight through my sacrificial acrylic. It was like a lightsaber!).

The actual etching took about 50 minutes, but I think I used a poor path for the laser. (I used a dot method, similar to how a printer prints things, back and forth from left to right). If I were to do this again, I would etch up/down instead and it would take probably 30 minutes. It would be faster because the Krait is slimmer left to right than up/down, so the laser would be able to etch more acrylic per pass in the up/down orientation.

TL;DR: it was freaking awesome to watch

Definitely etch this. Or anything. All my future PCs will have some sort of etching on it.

I'm trying to find more things I can etch right now, lol
