Quiet and good HDD?

Go to solution Solved by Archangel1994,

You can make any HDD pretty quiet simply by using anti-vibration rubber mounts (Look a bit like washers)

Hello, and thanks for reading this already!

Do some of you know some good and quiet harddrives?

Thanks in advance!

Quiet HDD? Haha.. An SSD.

HDD's are just not very quiet i general. Anti vibration stuff helps, but does not make a whole big world of a difference.

I had a Toshiba one in my computer, it drove me insane. Swapped it for a Seagate Barracuda from my NAS, which is quieter but I can still hear it.

Tempted to try the bungee cord mounting to see what that does though, you could also try that.

Holy shit (And this is not a blame or any form of negativity at all) and I seriously the only one that is so insensitive to noise?

I used to have 3 HDD's and they were very quiet (7200RPM). Every drive that made slightly more noise than usual became damn near whisper quiet when I mounted them on anti-vibration rubbers

It depends on the fans of course. Cheap fans can make high pitch noises or have a clicky bearing (usually with PWM fans); that's super annoying. But i would rather listen to my bequiet fans at full speed than my HDD vibrating. I have isolated it with rubber washers but the vibrations get transferred anyways, and since my Define R4 is already 2 years old, it has it's odds and ends where not everything sits together tighly and it will magnifiy the HDD's vibration there. I tried to  stop it, but there's no way. Except for getting rid of it. :D

I would almost say harddrive... Most fans has 'woosh'-ish sound, where as the harddrives I have use all have had a slight, higher pitched whine.

I also have had issues with vibrating harddrives in my case (spite using dampers). So now I just keep my case open for better airflow and stuff, since I'm folding 24/7.

@Archangel1994 fair enough, back when I did it, there wasn't a big world of difference.

Mostly because it was not only the vibration that were annoying but just the disc spinning sound in general.

Mine's quite a low pitch vibration sound. I really want to make it quiter.

Holy shit quote notifications simply don't notify me if they are too quick in succession

Something like that yes though I have used DIY rubber grommet things made by my dad on the past. They were copied from the Arc Midi R2 ones that have them by default

There are currently issues with the notifications when people use quotes. Use @ to tag people.

Hello, and thanks for reading this already!

Do some of you know some good and quiet harddrives?

Thanks in advance!

Hey Stijncat,

What are you planning to store on that drive?
I could suggest checking out WD Green, WD Red, WD AV and WD Purple. All of them work pretty quiet and shouldn't be a problem for you. Here are some links with more info:

As the guys pointed out, SSDs are generally more quiet as they don't have any moving parts. Different mounts and casings could reduce noise levels.

Thanks for the detailed response!

They all seem really good!

I'm planning to get a 500 GB SSD for all my windows and programs, and a 1TB for random files which aren't needed on startup.

(Excuse my late response, by the way!)

For a 1TB drive for simple storage and quiet performance I would say any of the four drives that I recommended would do the job. You could also check out WD Blue which works pretty quiet and is a simple and inexpensive everyday-usage drive. :) Here's a link: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=vValnz

Heard a lot of good things about the Blue!

I did notice that I can get a Black for € 20 / $27 more, what are the pro's of upgrading? :)

WD Black offers some additional features that actually defines it as a performance drive with better read/write speeds and give it an edge over WD Blue which is categorized as an everyday drive. Part of those features are the integrated dual-core CPU inside the drive that optimizes the caching process and improves multitasking, the longer warranty, some additional improvements in the firmware and tuning of the drive and some hardware improvements. With all this comes a big higher price and a bit higher noise levels (as with every performance drive since higher speeds mean higher noise level).

You can see the differences between the two in the spreadsheets for the different storage sizes here:

You would notice little to none difference between the two for your needs. The only major difference for you (since you would use it only for storage drive) should be the fact that WD Blue is limited to 1TB while WD Black offers sizes up to 4TB but it is louder. :)
