Snail Games is set to launch the OBox Android game console in early 2016, and sees it as not only much more vital than any Android console to date but also more cutting-edge than the Xbox One and PS4. This isn’t tittle tattle from the internet either as the OBox was officially launched in January at the CES tech conference. Can it even take on Microsoft and Sony's consoles?

Dan Doughty, Snail Games USA director of business development sees the OBox principle as more progressive than the current consoles, saying to MCV “The Xbox One and PS4 are already two generations behind in processing data and video. They will four or five generations behind by their end-of-life… That’s not acceptable in a technology-driven world.”

The OBox will let you swap out components for newer ones in PC-like fashion to keep up-to-date, and Doughty says it’ll only be a “year or two” before console-grade games like Call of Duty come to Android.

You might be thinking, who is this Snail Games? Well, it’s a Chinese company that makes the popular MMO Age of Wushu, and specialises in free-to-play online games. No, it’s not EA, but perhaps its vision of the gaming future is more progressive than the big players. Can it succeed? We'll find out next year.

This is very interesting, an android console going up against Sony and Microsoft... They are right, the crappiness of the Xbox One and PS4 can not be tolerated, they need competition.

Its called developer greed. They could easly develop a AAA game for android and ask 49.99 for it. but andriod needs to mature a little bit more and android developers need to get their head out of theire asses !

Most of my social circle, most of whom were console players for the vast majority of their life, have moved to PC this past year. These were people who argued against moving away from consoles just before the current generation of consoles were launched, too. I just find it odd.
