Funny about the flu shots. I've always thought they were a waste of time.

 

I'd also point out that the Daily Show is about as trustworthy as fox news, cnn, msnbc, abc, or any other large news outlet.

Flu shots keep changing , they are never constant, they will contain vaccines that fight against flu's that's trending in that season or that they predict , you might want to see this video , just because India doesn't have flushots doesn't mean doesn't mean you don't have to , there was a flushot camp in 2010 where even i was affected by a flu called Chikungunya , it's best to get the flushot when available , check this video , it's helpful , they are NOT waste of time

There are good vaccines and unfortunately, every now and then, bad ones.

 

I have yet to see any good evidence for the need for Gardasil (HPV vaccine).  That was purchased by the Canadian government to the tune of $300,000,000 on the first go (2006?).  I have never heard of the impending doom that is the herpes epidemic, have you?  I think it bothered me most because it was marketed to pre-teens here.  Come to school to get your herpes meds cause you are going to get herpes sooner or later.

Kind of, yeah.  Gardasil was marketed as an anti-cancer(cervical) vaccine.  Recently (6 months ago), they kicked off a campaign for tongue/throat cancer (again for Gardasil) in men... can you fill in the gaps?

Right, a very preventable disease without the vaccine... don't get me started on it.  I will go get resources and shit, like I did before.  It had a very narrow efficacy rate for the current (at the time) strains of HPV... under 5% of KNOWN strains.  that alone should raise eyebrows.

 

Gardasil's official response was 'those strains protected against are the most dangerous'.

Eh... that would suck.  Still, I would relate back to my claim of 4% efficacy against known strains.  Just because you take Gardasil in no way means you won't get herpes.  You screw around a lot with people you do not know, you are just as likely to get it.

 

I personally would not take a herpes vaccine.  I would just make sure to know where I am sticking my pecker/tongue. :mellow:  Actuallly, I have had a few scares... but all was good =).

You can take the vaccine, then be raped by someone with herpes and you can be around 96% (probably more) as likely to get it... with the vaccine in your system.  If you want to take it, go ahead.  It goes against my better judgment.

This is fundamentally a problem with the population's understanding of science (and to a broader extend, the education system but well that's going back into politics). Far too many use the same arguments they would use for economic discussions, religious discussions, moral discussions.

No, not really. Scientific research doesn't cares if you don't agree, if your feelings are hurt, if you view it as morally wrong, it just cares about certainty and measurable, verifiable and repeatable results. People get offended when confronted by this simply because they don't understand the scientific method, don't have any kind of understanding of math, algebra, etc. And still think science is as magical as a jewish zombie fisherman that walked on water and healed lepers.

Not vaccinating your kids for diseases is so stupid. I see stuff like the flu vaccine not needed as it usually doesn't work and if you are a healthy person it is better to get the flu. But bringing back small pox and other horribly dangerous diseases is out right stupid. Maybe a vaccine increases the chance of autism by 3% but other factors increase it by way more then 3% that you can't stop. Gamma rays are changing your DNA every second which leads to mutations and diseases. If you a big enough nut why not put you kids in faraday cages in nuclear shelters. Come on people. We are civilized and should learn before you protest something that helps you.

Initially, you said HPV is a non-issue and not a diease/virus. Then you essentially said HPV is also preventable by not having sex with random people, which is not the only case to get HPV.
