4K consoles!

iHammmy
We expect it won't be too long before the Xbox One and PS4 get their inevitable refresh, and there's a good chance it could come around the time of their two year anniversaries in November 2015. Those odds are now looking even better.

Netflix exec John Hunt claims that Sony "promised" a 4K-friendly version of the PS4 that he expects to "eventually" support HDR, reports The Huffington Post.

Sounds like Hunt said more than he should have. Since then, Netflix has toldForbes that it isn't in a position to speak about Sony's plans, but clarified that Hunt believes that when the PS4 and Xbox One do their (expected) two-year refresh, they'll add the component for 4K video playback.

Ultra HD Edition

The Xbox One at it stands includes HDMI 1.4, but that's not enough to deliver uncompromised 4K - a more difficult pill to swallow after all the fanfare about Microsoft's box being a one-stop entertainment hub.

Despite Sony announcing a 4K video service for the PS4 back in 2013, the console doesn't currently support the medium either.

It certainly wouldn't surprise us to see a refresh around November time. Maybe someone can slim the Xbox One down a bit too? We don't know if Microsoft has noticed but it's rather hefty.

It seems impossible until it's done.

I feel like being able to play games at 1080p would be much more important than being able to play videos at 4k though.

60fps is a must for me personally.

IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN!! DEAL WITH IT

I don't play consoles anyway...

Not interested, as Snapdragon 800 series phones have 4K playback and recording. Gaming in 4K on a PS4 and XBOX One would be a nightmare

One requires an entire redesign, and much more powerful and expensive hardware than the console includes, and the other involves upgrading an HDMI port. Get some perspective.

lmao

You expect sony to make a console thats as good as a $4000 PC? Both companies can't even create a console that can run a game @ 1080p 60fps.

LOL, consoles will never achieve 4k...

To be honest the GPUs in the Xbox and PS4 aren't half bad its just the CPUs suck BIG TIME!

Yeah this batch anyway. If the 380X is an early indication of what kind of GPUs the next consoles could have (if the buisness model is still viable), 4K should be easy :P

But a port upgrade for HDMI (hardware or software if it can) probably isn't that crazy of a notion. PS3 and 360 had some changes to the port setups during their lifetimes. Think because 4k is going to be still relativly limited in how much it gets used, the people that want it will do a bit of research as to what can actually run it.

It will probably be named PS-4K and would have the option to watch UHD videos at best, forget gaming (If it is released this year).

What on earth makes you think that a 380X is going to be available as part of a £100 APU any time soon? o.0

lol, not soon :P

Like 5 or 6 years when the next batch are due. Depending if they rush or draw out this gen.

OK, but by then the 380X will be long since obsolete and it won't matter anyway.

Look at the equivalent now. An equivalent GPU in its day would have been something like the GTX 260. How does that fare against a low end card of now like the R7 260X? Not brilliantly.

lol stop taking what I say so literally :P

I'm suggesting cards like the 380X would are a theoretical base line for what consoles could get. not that GPU it self, but something in that range or maybe 390x (if its a thing). Over the course of 5 years or so, that level of GPU power needs to be refined down to an acceptable TDP for consoles and become easy and cheap to make. HBM/3d stacking also going to see an explosion of internal bandwidth for GPUs/future consoles.

If we look at the PS4, its GPU has a little bit less computational power than my old HD5850, 1.8 vs 2 TFLOPS. But I am very sure that the GPU in the PS4 is able to do much more because of an updated feature set, greater amount of VRAM and is highly programable. Also being in a much slimmed down API enviroment helps achieve its peak through put.

But that's what I'm talking about. The PS4 absolutely decimates a mid-range old GPU. I compared the GTX 260 with R7 260X not for the sake of being confusing (though I did that quite well >_>) but because the 260X is similar to what the current gen consoles have and its performance absolutely destroys what was a decent GPU in its day

I know full well that you're talking about an APU with the power of a 380X, and not a literal 380X. But in five/six years time it's not going to fare any better than a GTX 260 or equivalent would now.

You know I think we are saying the same thing more or less, but coming at it from different angles.
