Gaming in 5.1 on PC any good?

orangecat

So I'm thinking of getting a 5.1 system for my PC so I can game in 5.1 but the last time i tried 5.1 on a PC my experience wasn't very good. Most games only output in 2 channel and the only way to get 5.1 was to push a button on the speakers to force 2 channel to 5.1 with effects. So anyone know if 5.1 gaming on PC is any good like do all/most games support 5.1?

Eh, I prefer a good set of bookshelf speakers, they can still make the effect of having stuff behind you.

I use my sound card to emulate 5.1 and it works like a charm, sounds good to me but you don't need 5.1 to know where people are coming from. Assuming you don't have a noisy gaming environment you can just get Open-back headphones and literally pinpoint where people are

RIG: I7-4790k @ 4.5GHz | MSI Z97S SLI Plus | 12GB Geil Dragon RAM 1333MHz | Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 970 (1550MHz core/7800MHz memory) @ +18mV(Maxed out at 1650/7800 so far) | Corsair RM750 | Samsung 840 EVO 120GB, 1TB Seagate Barracuda | Fractal Design Arc Midi R2 (Closed) | Sound Blaster Z                                                                                                                        Getting: Noctua NH-D15 | Possible 250GB Samsung 850 Evo                                                                                        Need a console killer that actually shits on every console? Here you go (No MIR/Promo)

This is why you should not get an FX CPU for ANY scenario other than rendering on a budget http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/286142-fx-8350-r9-290-psu-requirements/?p=3892901 http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/266481-an-issue-with-people-bashing-the-fx-cpus/?p=3620861

I would recommend solid stereo monitors... Dunno about 5.1 support, but I am a fan of good stereo.

Games do support 5.1 and it does work, but it's not that practical with wired 5.1 systems to have speakers set up around you. Due to the small satellite sizes of 5.1 computer speakers you'll want the rear speakers quite close to you, and in most cases there's nowhere close behind you to put the speakers. If there is though, then yes 5.1 does work.

Desktop: Intel Core i5 2380P (2400 w/o iGPU), MSI H61, 8GB RAM, 256GB SP610, 500GB WD Blue, HIS R9 280, Antec TruePower Classic 550W, Inwin MANA 134, QNIX QX2710, CM QuickFire Rapid, Logitech G402

Laptop: Toshiba Satellite L40D, AMD A6-6310, 6GB RAM, 500GB HDD, Radeon R4 Graphics, 14" 1366x768

Phone: iPhone 6 Space Gray 64GB, T-Mobile $60/mo 3GB plan

I know but 5.1 does still have its advantages over 2 channel.

If you're gonna do 5.1, sound cards do it no justice...

Get a nice Pre-Amp/Amp combo or get a nice AVR.

Games are programmed for 5.1/7.1 but you have to set that up in game and make sure you're actually set to multichannel in windows.
