German Chancellor Wants to end Net Nuetrality and add Fast Lanes.

AndThenThereWas1

In short, German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, is pushing to end net neutrality and create a 2 lane system which lets companies pay for the fast lane.

In comments on Thursday in Berlin, Merkel argued for a two-lane internet. One lane for "special," high priority service, and another that's meant to resemble the internet as it exists today.

While supporters of net neutrality argue that it is key to the continued growth of the internet, Merkel believes just the opposite. She argues that fast lanes are necessary for the development of new, advanced uses of the internet, like telemedicine or driverless cars. According to Merkel, without guaranteed, fast-access internet connections, such innovations won't come to market.

I wonder which ISP filled her pockets to gain her support. Looks like you Germans and potentially Europeans might have to fight for net neutrality as well.

Sounds like Germany needs some freedom

But really, is she intentionally being thick or what? Have they not been paying attention (or even caring) about the issues we've had on this side of the Atlantic? How much are the ISPs paying her on this one? Should be an outrageous amount, given how Germany is already pretty well off. I can't wait to hear the rationalizing for supporting fast lanes.

Oh Merkel, driverless cars don't need fast lanes. Not really. Driverless cars need high powered 360 degree sonar and radar arrays to map their environment and perhaps a data uplink to a mapping service like Google, Maquest, Navteq (and others) so that it can update and be updated in real time about traffic and other things. They also need incredibly smart coding and near AI levels of "thinking" to be able to react to their environment. But driverless cars don't need fast lanes to be created. How can I say that? Cause driverless cars already exist, many of them as standalone units that truly drive themselves. See cars like the new S Class, which in Europe (since Europe has no anti-Skynet legislation) allows for such cars to actually drive themselves already.

In other words, stop talking about things you don't understand and stop talking out of your ass on things that people will call you out on. Once again, how much money did she or the Government get for having this position and using such weak examples to back it?

Obviously they did. There is nothing that could possibly be gained from this anti consumer act.

I hate that woman. Just like practically every other politician, but she's among the top of my hate list.

I no longer feel bad for what my government allegedly did to her phone. Germany and treating a certain class of people like trash due to their circumstances...why does that seem familiar?

If anyone is against net neutrality at this point, we can safely assume someone is filling their pockets to be this way.

Maybe now people can start to appreciate the conundrum the western democracies has gotten themselves into by allowing liberal capitalistic ideals to infiltrate, corrupt and then completely derail the democratic, political machinery.

All that is left now is to eat it ... every last crumb of it.

I'm confused: is there any way that the European Union would ever allow this?

That would depend. Merkel holds a lot of weight in the EU but she'll never get it through alone, it would depend on what side the UK, France, Italy & Holland take.

Oh and the Nazi jokes are not funny guys, Germany has moved on since then plus its not the fault of the people that the government is nuts.

Course not but they're the major economies and as such have the biggest influence on what happens in Brussels.

Edit - or Strasbourg.

They are already looking into fastlanes for things like operation over the internet with those robots, which is what she is saying I think. I have no problem with those applications as they are used to save lives.

EDIT: Everybody is going insane here, She isn't talking about consumer fastlanes but more about specialised applications like telemedicine and the over the internet surgery which was also stated some time ago when net neutrality was being spoken about in the EU counsil or something.

And the British pornography filters are only for filtering pornography, blocking the Chaos Computer Club webpage is just a mistake. And when the opt out option suddenly drops its a mistake too.

That's why the government also needs to be reviewed by independent agencies and in the EU there are plenty of countries and organizations sueing countries and such.

Is it fast lanes for services to the public or is it internal fast lanes. If company A wants to pay for a fast lane to connect another part of Company A then that is fine. If company A wants to pay for a fast lane to partner company B then that is fine. I only have an issue with fast lanes if they are used for double dipping money from connections between consumers and companies.
