FiLIP2, a "smart watch" for kids

The idea of attaching a smart watch to a kid is not a new idea as LG has shown prototypes in the past, but now there is a product for sale in the US. The FilIP 2 is currently $99 (will go up to $149) at AT&T and is pretty much a simple wrist mounted phone rather than a full companion for a phone. The watch seems a little large for a kid but looks much smaller than the one from LG. The watch is simple with only two buttons and a variety of colors to choose from. A child can press and hold a button to trigger an automatic location beacon, background sound recording, and call and text the primary parents number that is programmed into the device. If the Primary number doesn't respond the device calls through a list of emergency contacts that are added by the parents. Parents can set up geo-fences to get alerted when the child enters or leaves zones like home and school. The device can be configured with the mobile app

The FiLIP 2 is meant to fill that gap in between the time when a child is too small to sent out to play by themselves, and yet still too young for their first smartphone. It’s aimed at kids under 11, the company has said.

Interesting. While it's a better solution to a phone for minors, I can see them loosing the watch just as much as the phone.

I might be wrong.

Neat idea.. Very predictable that they put "CALLING MOM" on the screen too :P

Nice idea but what will the screen display when he calls his parents?? If it shows calling or something they might get in trouble of they are being kidnapped.

Seems a bit expensive though, 149 for something that most active kids will be able to break within minutes. (How will such a watch hold up when kids fall and try to catch themselves with their hands/arms, or when they are playing in a sandbox)
