Downloading apps from Google play on 2.3?

minimoose

I am thinking of getting an older android smartphone for someone as a first smartphone, but I was wondering if they will be able to download apps with such an old OS (2.3).

I know on iOS after a few new versions you can't really get new apps, but I'm not sure about Android.

My sister uses an Android 2.3 phone and is able to download most, if not anything.

I have just a tiny bit of knowledge of mobile developing (All 3 platforms) and I know on Android you choose to develop for example for Android 2.3 - 4.4 and for iOS it's more like you choose iOS 5, or 6, or 7, etc.

https://play.google.com/store/

Search for the apps you need, at the bottom it says which version it requires.

I can't think of a single good reason for buying such an old phone unless it's $15 or less.
