EVGA 970 ACX uses a cooler initially designed for different GPUs

Source 1: linustechtips.com OP: DeViLzzz

Source 2: eteknix.com

  • Picture in source 2.

  • Cooler looks to be taken from a different GPU.

  • Comment from EVGA: “The way the EVGA GTX 970 ACX heat sink was designed is based on the GTX 970 wattage plus an additional 40% cooling headroom on top of it. (Giving 200W) There are 3 heat pipes on the heatsink – 2 x 8mm major heat pipes to distribute the majority of the heat from the GPU to the heatsink, and a 3rd 6mm heatpipe is used as a supplement to the design to reduce another 2-3 degrees Celsius. Also we would like to mention that the cooler passed NVIDIA Greenlight specifications. Due to the GPU small die size, we intended for the GPU to contact two major heat pipes with direct touch to make the best heat dissipation without any other material in between. We all know the Maxwell GPU is an extremely power efficient GPU, our SC cooler was overbuilt for it and allowed us to provide cards with boost clocks at over 1300MHz. EVGA also has an “FTW” version for those users who want even higher clocks. Regarding fan noise, we understand that some have expressed concerns over the fan noise on the EVGA GTX 970 cards, this is not a fan noise issue but it is more of an aggressive fan curve set by the default BIOS. The fan curve can be easily adjusted in EVGA PrecisionX or any other overclocking software. Regardless, we have heard the concerns and will provide a BIOS update to reduce the fan noise during idle.

  • The reference GTX 970 cooler has a 250W TDP. The EVGA’s GTX 970 ACX cooler has a 200W TDP.

  • The 3rd heatpipe (allegedly) isn’t even sealed off.

  • "We need to be careful not to change the things that most players liked, just because the ones who didn't like those things are the most vocal.”

  • Compare’s the success of Watchdog to the success of Assassin’s Creed (1) - “Not perfect but the commercial reception was good”.

  • The DisplayPort Alt Mode can also drive adaptors that support the huge installed base of existing DisplayPort, HDMI, DVI, and VGA displays.

  • DisplayPort Alt Mode can choose to transmit on just one or two of the four available lanes, so that the other two lanes can be used for SuperSpeed USB data at the same time.

Australian Government now has unlimited ability to monitor, access and control any computer as well as jail whistleblowers and more

Source 1: linustechtips.com OP: Keudn

Source 2: smh.com AUTOPLAY VIDEO

  • new bill “allows ASIO (Australian Security Intelligence Organization) to seek just one warrant to access a limitless number of computers on a computer network when attempting to monitor a target, which lawyers, rights groups, academics and Australian media organisations have condemned”

  • “would effectively allow the entire internet to be monitored, as it is a "network of networks" and the bill does not specifically define what a computer network is”

  • ASIO will also be able to copy, delete, or modify the data held on any of the computers it has a warrant to monitor

  • allows ASIO to disrupt target computers, use innocent third-party computers not targeted in order to access a target computer

  • “Anyone - including journalists, whistleblowers and bloggers - who "recklessly" discloses "information ... [that] relates to a special intelligence operation" faces up to 10 years' jail”

  • Those who identify ASIO agents could also face a decade in prison under the new bill, a tenfold increase on the existing maximum penalty.

  • After concerns were raised by Labor and Senator Leyonhjelm, the government agreed to amend the legislation to specifically rule out ASIO using torture.

  • "ASIO cannot, does not and has never engaged in torture," Senator Brandis said.

  • The Australian Greens, through Senator Scott Ludlam, put forward an amendment that would limit the number of computers ASIO could access with one warrant to 20 but it failed to gain support from Labor or the government.

  • Independent Senator Nick Xenophon and Liberal Democratic Senator David Leyonhjelm also put forward amendments that would protect whistleblowers but these did not gain enough support either.

  • One of the amendments put forward by Senator Xenophon would have required ASIO's watchdog, the  Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security, to report publicly each year on how many devices ASIO accessed.

  • But Labor and the government voted against it, with Senator Brandis saying it "would not be appropriate" to report figures as it would reveal information about ASIO's capabilities. apparently Senator Brandis is the one behind the bill

  • many fear its disclosure offences go too far, with the Australian Lawyers Alliance saying they would have "not just a chilling effect but a freezing effect" on national security reporting

  • this bill has passed through the senate - still has to go through the house of representatives

  • passage through the house of representatives is “all but guaranteed

Blizzard cancels its next-gen MMO Titan after seven years

Source 1: linustechtips.com OP: dlf

Source 2: polygon.com

  • last year it was made known that Blizzard was “going back to the drawing board” with the project

  • Titan was never officially announced, though Blizzard was not afraid to talk about it

  • in a recent interview with Polygon, Co-founder and CEO Mike Morhaime said “We had created World of Warcraft, and we felt really confident that we knew how to make MMOs. So we set out to make the most ambitious thing that you could possibly imagine. And it didn't come together. We didn't find the fun. We didn't find the passion. We talked about how we put it through a reevaluation period, and actually, what we reevaluated is whether that's the game we really wanted to be making. The answer is no.

  • Chris Metzen, Blizzard Senior VP of story and franchise development called the decision “excruciating”

  • Mike Morhaime continued “It's always really, really hard to make those kind of decisions. It was hard when we canceled Warcraft Adventures. It was hard when we canceled StarCraft Ghost. But it has always resulted in better-quality work.

  • Metzen and Morhaime suggested that the recent trend of smaller-scale Blizzard releases like Hearthstone and Heroes of the Storm has played a part in the company moving away from Titan

  • suggesting they may not have to make big blockbusters to continue being successful

Great show guys! It was a little disappointing that you had to cut the guest spot a little short because Skype was wrecking you, but I assume the reason you brought them on was to give a little explanation into why they (mostly) left Newegg and what their plans are now (which you seemed to get to in the time you had). This had to have been the most times Luke has been fired and/or dead to you in one show, but I'm glad the shirt, which was announced weeks ago, finally got some show time (sorry Linus).

@LinusTech Now, I have a bit of an odd request. When you go to do the giveaway, could you keep page 742 as the first prize draw? I'm not on that page (at least I don't think so), but I feel like it would be a little inconsiderate, to whoever is on that page, to re-randomize the page since you already did that part live.

Thanks for the show and good luck to everyone in the giveaway.

All I care about right now are the giveaway results.

The giveaway has been delayed because the site crashed when they were trying to do it live.

There should be some way to "kick" some people off the forum for a while. Yes I know IPB allows the admins to "close" the forum to(o) all traffic. Like give admins and mods a little more priority then users, when need be.
