no that is not the case they are however harder to get an automatic but if it has been converted into a "sporting rifle" i.e. semi auto they are easy to get in most of the us

Automatic weapons and silencers require a tax stamp and have to complete an application in accordance with the NFA through the ATF. I believe part of that process involves finger printing, and all automatic weapons and silencers have to be registered.
