Belgium's biggest ISP wants netflix to pay.

witting

Telenet the flemish isp who recently announced their gigabit FTTN network, said that they would like to have a say in the europian/belgian net neutrality law allowing ISP to charge sites like netlfix and youtube for the heavy network traffic they cause.

Fun fact: netflix can't even be viewed in belgiun as of today. They are coming this fall.

And this right here is why netflix should have never accepted to pay american carriers. If they paid one, everyone else is going to want a slice of the pie.

The reason they want to do this is probably cause they oversold their bandwidth on the fiber lines and Screwed up and rather than buy more fiber badwitdth they want any bandwidth heavy tasks be Throttled. GG Belgium ISP.

Telenet has much better infrastructure than belgacom (I think that's what you're using), someone on teksyndicate pointed out that it's most likely liberty global a US company who has 53% of the shares in telenet.

Honestly Netflix did what they had to. They would have lost more money by NOT paying for their bandwidth.

Yeah. Netflix set a very, VERY bad precedent with that move.

Hoping Victorious Secret is right. The US doesn't have the balls to stand up to ISPs or other big corporations/industries, whereas the EU is known for cracking the whip, so hopefully this gets squashed before it goes anywhere.

I'm really pissed that Netflix has even agreed to pay U.S. ISP's. Should have said F off and if Netflix's speeds were decreased because of it, then put a message while it's buffering saying your ISP is corrupted and purposely making your connection slow.

I'd presume if they had put a message up that they'd get sued by the ISP's.

Then they'd go to court for telling the truth? If they get sued for "bad mouthing"(cause that's really all it is), then why are there commercials on TV saying that X brand is worse than our Y brand?

Companies are just getting butt hurt and Netflix needs to put its foot down. If it comes to the point where Comcast/TimeWarner doesn't want to allow Netflix on their connections, then so be it. When consumers are complaining about not having Netflix then they'll complain to their ISP's, not Netflix.

The EU is going to trample that ISP. They've already start rolling out laws protecting net neutrality.

Yeah. I think it might be the taxes. Most if not all EU countries have pretty heavy taxes compared to USA and i think the goverments realise that if they want to keep said taxes they better dam well please us with good services.
