In half a years time I am going to look at buying my first car. I have a thing for old cars and have been looking a lot at some Golf I, bugs and similar type of cars. They are also super cheap to insure as they are veterans most of them.

Although, I am not sure how reliable a veteran car would be and how they would fare during the winter, as they throw a lot of salt on the roads.

Renault Cleo. An old one of course. Small, easy to drive and cheap. Plus, it take take a battering.

What do they know of England, who only England know?

Definitely. You can usually find a good WRX for that kind of money. Does it have to be super practical or are you into fun cars? The WRX is both but there are definitely cars in the same price range that will be a better experience if you sacrifice a bit of practicalit

There is nothing wrong with practicality. In fact, it really helps when you get a foot of wet snow on the road. When that happens, you kind of need to have a 4wd truck parked in your driveway to go anywhere where I live. So i need something that is fun and practical.

Oh I by no means think practicality is bad, if I lived in Canada I would be driving an STI no doubt, you don't really have a foot of snow in the UK though.

the 309 gti 16 aswell :)

the 205 gti 1.9l isn't that expensive and it is available in UK! :)

My first was a 306 GTI with a supercharged 3.0 V6 and some other tweaks to get 300hp on the front wheels .... and oh boy did you have to be carefull with that haha

Let's agree to disagree

Hey guys

As much as I want to dump all my money into PC, I must buy something more handy for everyday life, so I must get a car

Well, I am a car nut, I love cars, although I am not a mechanic type of guy..

I was looking at first cars (around the region of £2000/$4000, but pricing might be different in US) and I think I will go with an IS200.

What first car do you had/have, or which one would you choose?

The IS200 is actually a great car. It's a shame you don't get many with low km anymore. And the ones you get, usually ain't that cheap. About 8k€ or more, here at least.

The only problem is the expensive maintenance.

Anyways, my first car and current is a '01 1.4 Xsara. Gets the job done, I suppose.

I was thinking about an Impreza GT, those are not that expensive and are pretty bulletproof.

The 330CI is quite nice and a very different car, at the point where BMW's start to make sense. The 318CI just feels like a dog to me to be honest. As for the RX-8 it's a quite fun car and the rotary isn't necessarily a downside as long as you know what you're doing. As long as you maintain it well it's a very solid engine, especially in that spec. As an added bonus rotaries sound absolutely amazing.

That aside I'd still get the IS200.

Wankels are great as long as you have a gas pump nearby and a lot of change.

well i got my dads old 99' vw golf 4 as a first car and im still driving it everyday to work. even though its 15 years old and with 270k has been his and my daily driver for the whole time it still runs like nothing happened. sure its not that pleasing to look at anymore since the years have worn out some things but as far as reliability goes its awesome and also maintainance is quite cheap around here so its perfect for beginners in my opinion

did you upgrade the engine with a supercharged V6? good lord how it sounds  :D

Engine swap from a peugeot 306 3.0 V6 had stock 210 hp then added a supercharger and some other mods too, that was 9 years ago tough

Reason i choose that engine was due to the fact that the engine bays where the same so it was easy to swap ..., the GTI was cheaper on insurance too :P

It also had the dimma peugeot 306 MAXI bodykit mat black painted with white OZ racing 16* rims, backs seats removed and recaro front seats. Car weight was around 940 KG

Added picture: but then mat black with 16 spoke oz racing rims

Got a Merc 190E 2,3 8v Sportline in black as my first car. Great little car. Fell in love with it.. Don't get a Merc as a first car

Did some light engine mods on that. Unfortunately the frankly crap head gasket + cooling made itself known in traffic and turned the engine into a solid lump of metal

I've still got a Merc 190E 2,3 8v Sportline. But an earlier year and in red instead. But it's impossible to maintain a merc on a students budget when it's got some issues.

They are nice handling cars. Well balanced and really fun in the snow. At the limit they can dance a bit too on a dry track.

The IS200 is not a bad car. It's got a solid engine and will probably run for quite a while.

Personally im probably going for a supra next. Gen 3 or Gen 2 turbo. (Maybe a Skyline R33 GT-S if there are any alright ones on market.. Since i've already gotten an offer on one)

My insurance is pretty cheap after 4 years without an accident and the yearly tax is about the same as on my benz.

Age 16, with very little in his bank account, my dad bought me one of these.

01.jpg

It was an automatic and only 2 wheel drive but I didn't care. I had a banging ass sound system (kicker 400w amp, 10 inch square kicker woofer, and a 12 inch pioneer added onto that). I loved that car, it was my best friend for years, untill some ASSHOLE decided to turn into my lane without looking and head on'ed me. Had my baby for 6 years without an accident (not counting deer, whom are bastards) and NO TICKETS. That one in the picture isn't mine, I sadly have no pictures of my baby anymore :( She had 140000 miles on her when she died, had 105000 on her when I got her.

If you've never driven a 3000gt I suggest you do. They ride very low, and have amazing amounts of grip thanks to their wide tires. They have a nice solid but not rough ride, and are just a blast to drive, even if their automatic. When I get a real job my next car will be a 3000gt. Although this time I'm getting the 5 speed turbo AWD version so I can do this

Edit: better video

Ketchup is better than mustard.

GUI is better than Command Line Interface.

First car I bought was a '91 Nissan Sentra for $350. It was a simple car with cheap consumables. I put another $350 into it to have it running tip-top comfortably. It would average 35+ MPG but wasn't very quick. It was still quite fun because it would chirp into second gear because of the 13" tires. Insurance was very affordable even though I was young at the time.

My first car was/is a '99 Jeep Wrangler. It was a steal at the $1600 I paid for it, and its in amazing shape considering it's 15 years old. The only issues it really has is the gauges drop out occasionally (which is a common issue for the model, I just need time to clean the connections) and the transmission is probably going to need to be replaced. The previous owner also put in a pretty sweet sound system, even when you put the volume down as low as possible the sub-woofer still shakes the entire car  :D

1991 black Nissan Pathfinder. Bought it off my old man neighbour back in 97 when I was 16. 68,000k on it and I paid 4 thousand.

That summer was a blast since the gas prices were averaging 30 cents a litre.
