Hey guys

As much as I want to dump all my money into PC, I must buy something more handy for everyday life, so I must get a car

Well, I am a car nut, I love cars, although I am not a mechanic type of guy..

I was looking at first cars (around the region of £2000/$4000, but pricing might be different in US) and I think I will go with an IS200.

What first car do you had/have, or which one would you choose?

@HippY if you're a car nut like me you could get this: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201407085653990/sort/default/radius/1500/advert-type/Classified/onesearchad/used%2Cnearlynew%2Cnew/model/944/quicksearch/true/usedcars/page/1/postcode/w112bq/make/porsche?logcode=p

Might not be the most reliable thing in the world though hahaha

Like Victor said you probably get Subarus at a pretty decent price. Look into either a Liberty (EDIT: Sorry, Legacy, forgot that only us Aussies call them Liberty) or an Impreza.

I am not sure what is available across the pond, but a nice cheap Subaru would suit anyone IMO.

Definitely. You can usually find a good WRX for that kind of money. Does it have to be super practical or are you into fun cars? The WRX is both but there are definitely cars in the same price range that will be a better experience if you sacrifice a bit of practicality.

If you're in the UK, unless your minted an is200 is probably way too much on insurance. I've got a vauxhall corsa which is pretty darn cheap on insurance and cost me £250 from some family friends. Needs work on it, but it's running and will help me get going. For around £2000 your best bet is an older ford (not an escort mk.6) such as one of the original run focus' or a vauxhall Astra. If you can find one, a Dacia Sandero is a top choice. To put insurance into context, we have a mini, and I couldn't even get learner insurance on it, the only companies offering insurance were charging £3000, let alone full drivers insurance costs. I personally would pick up a classic car, maybe even a Peugeot 205 or Renault 5, get some classic insurance, join the car club for it (some offer an insurance discount) and then get a black box installed.

@VMaxMuffin

Sadly I can get a car up to 150 HP and 2.0l, or insurance group 27, as even one level above my insurance is at £2.700  Per year..

Other choice would be spare a little more and 318CI facelift... but those car seems to be expensive and less reliable than IS200

I am into fun cars, but a level of practicality ( 4seats would be good) and reliability is important, as I am still a college student, just a year ahead uni, and I do not want to spend all my money on a car

That's funny, that's exactly the opposite impression of what I have.

Huh...

Silverado: Broke down every other week

Mustang: This thing has been fucking everywhere and the first mechanical problem we've had was a power steering line getting nicked and leaking

I'm getting my drivers license next summer and i think i'm getting a mazda RX8 they are pretty cheap here. Or i will buy my dads c200 if he wants to get rid of it.

I am thinking about them, but that rotary engine puts me off

Here in Northern Ireland people do not care about cars as much as they should, and RX8 requires special treatment, it is hard to repair, and specialist cost a fortune

Yeah that is the only downside (and probably why they are so cheap). It's a nice car though.

The IS200 definitely isn't a bad choice for a first car. The 1G-FE is pretty much unkillable and if something should ever go wrong they are ridiculously cheap to service. The power is nothing special though, but as a young driver I know first hand how ridiculous the insurance prices are and there should still be a little fun left in the 160 horsepower. With a little fun it might even become exciting. The 318CI I'd stay away from, it feels slower than it actually is (which can be both positive and negative, mostly negative IMO), but most of all they are anything but cheap to run.

What year? I'm by no means an expert on Ford, but everyone of my family members that have owned one have had nothing but problems be it an Escort, Mondeo, Focus or what ever.

Im 20 yo, driving for 3 years, with no bonus though ( I was not the first driver), but for me they are not bad

Is200 is £670 for a year, so £120x1 and £60 x10

I can live with that

This is the biggest power I can get, and it is pretty big jump from the 1.0 Vauxhall corsa C (it had 68 hp... long time ago) :D

About BMW. I was in a 330CI, and I know, it has twice the engine size, but overall the car, the ride, it was beautiful. but running cost scares me

The 330CI is quite nice and a very different car, at the point where BMW's start to make sense. The 318CI just feels like a dog to me to be honest. As for the RX-8 it's a quite fun car and the rotary isn't necessarily a downside as long as you know what you're doing. As long as you maintain it well it's a very solid engine, especially in that spec. As an added bonus rotaries sound absolutely amazing.

That aside I'd still get the IS200.

The problem here is that people tend to not care about the cars that much, so it is a rather big lottery here

I like in the is200 that it is unorthodox.. there are plenty of 318/320 around here, but only a handful of Lexus

personally if I could, I'd pick up a 205 gti 1.9l, because it's such an awesome car.
