Advanced Micro Devices is working on two new FX-series microprocessors for “mainstream” desktop systems. The new chips will be clocked slightly higher compared to available modules and will barely change the situation on the market of desktops with increased performance.

repost. brb with link.

Hmm, now I'm actually conflicted as to whether or not I should report this as a repost... It was a topic discussed within the thread pertaining to FX chip price slashing.

So GHZ,

Many Wow.

I mean AMD what are you thinking? I will maybe buy the 8320e because of the lower TDP, but seriously, you overclock the chip and sell it as new one? Same thing with 9370 and 9590. Makes no sense whatsoever

There's a sucker born every minute. I mean, if this was a process shrink to 28nm I'd find it easier to stomach despite the still blatant reuse of poorly-constructed Vishera architecture.

they just need to limp this arch on a little more, i think as soon as they knew the 28nm node was going to be delayed and they couldnt get the clocks they wanted they scrapped all FX lineup changes and started working on their new arch. and thats not something they did in the last 6 months

People need to realise what this is. This is CPUs with a very well binning.

It is common for a manufacture to put out new products with the same architecture. Intel does it too. This is when they save up CPUs with a certain level of binning. When they have enough, they make a product out of it. This is the case.

Intel does the exact same thing though, they do release upgrades more often but within the same generation you're paying more for slightly higher clock speeds

Slightly higher clocks within the same thermal design. And it's not like the price difference between a 4770 and 4790 is all that much. Intel has to sell chips it can guarantee are stable at a given clock rate. Because if they fudge it and a less than perfect chip goes out to a corporate computer, and if the unstable FPU makes a rounding error, it can cost a company a billion dollars. My dad (property casualty actuary) has seen it happen before where the end figure should be 0, the posted number is 1 billion USD loss, and only 443 million can be chalked up to the software still running in only 32-bit mode.

misleading Title, i told my self wah finaly some competition to intel, but in the end nothing, AMD need to make a new cpu arch, Apu are still not there yet for gamers

And yet APUs are built on the same architecture as the FX series with only a couple tiny tweaks and an iGPU. Can't wait until we're past Excavator on Carrizo and we get to see what Jim Keller has had the team working on.

Intel practically does the same thing, through enabling and disabling features.

Question. Considering they're going to slash pricing for the older CPU's, and also considering this is just an OC'd version of that CPU, can't you just OC the cheaper, older one?

These chips are binned at a better tier, making it more likely these will overclock better at lower thermal & power needs. That said, it's still a lottery.

I'm really beginning to wonder why neither company gives out a full feature set CPU. Just guarantee everything works at stock clocks only, but let the user overclock for better gaming, and include ECC, vPro, etc.. I'm shocked AMD doesn't do this actually because it would make their platform so much more attractive even at a performance loss. I shouldn't have to buy a shitty motherboard just to use ECC by Intel.

Carrizo will be underwhelming I think because 20nm still wasn't fleshed out when production was reported to have begun. The completion of HSA is great, but without even a process shrink those little tweaks aren't going to fix AMD's much larger architectural problems. I await Carrizo's successor and Jim Keller's first original chip.
