Linus Tech Tips Forum Getting Spammed - Why?

Hi all LTT forum members,

I'm wanting to discuss about the fact that this forum seems to get spammed a heck of a lot. What attracts spammers to this forum. I know it's a great forum but there are many other forums out there that these spammers could go and do their thing. Personally I don't think they should do it at all, if you want my honest opinion. What is it, are they just so dang bored and have nothing else to do that they think "Hey! I know what, I'll go an spam a forum, that sounds like fun? I just don't get it honestly, I really don't.

I wanna know everyone's thoughts on this, what do you think about these spammers guys and girls?

I haven't seen that much spam recently, it's been good.

I also have not seen any spam. Doesn't mean it's not there, just means moderators are doing a good job of keeping it in check. I've noticed the mods around ehre are very active, both in posting and keeping people in check.

There were. A member created the exact same thread 11-12 times? It was all just crap...seriously. You can't say it was a server or internet error because it most definitely wasn't. It was some random crap about call girls. No pictures, just text. The reason you don't see it is because they were reported. The mod(s) who dealt with it know what I'm talking about.

Not true, I've been on forums with userbases of a handful of people and we still got spammed.

Well, it costs them nothing ^^ but it is easier on a popular forum simply because spammers will be more likely to find out about it I would assume

Yeah, it's incredibly annoying regardless too.

Well forums that use standard software (like LTT) are easier targets for spam bots.

It doesn't effect me in anyway apart from being a tad annoying. Like if you're looking in 'General Discussion' and are trying to find a good thread to look at, if the forum has been spammed, you have to scroll passed all the spam to get to the real threads. It's just an inconvenience that isn't needed especially if a spammer has posted the exact same thread 11 or more times. It can make you a tad peeved.

I've noticed that we seem to get a bot attack at least once a day. Although the excellent mods on here deal with it far quicker than any forum I've ever been on. I wish they could do so by finding the computer running the bot and going office space on it.

 

Seems kind of stupid to try and spam and sell shit on a tech forum, kinda like trying to sell heroin or something inside a police station.

It's based on the sheer volume of LTT, Spammer see this sight on a random Google search, and say hey! This is good. Or hell I wouldn't be surprised if LTT was on some kind of list, and out user and post counts with that.

The mods must do a fantastic job catching that stuff right away, I've never noticed much spam.

I kind of like noticing it so I can cuss them out before they get deleted+banned

Hell yeah makes sense. Thanks btw for throwing in the Office Space shout out, that is one of my faves and I had not seen anyone mention that movie before on LTT

I would say because it is popular. I do not see that much spam, besides people with 1 post on giveaways.though.
