My thing is i am getting into dat now for doing my vinyl transfer. I think that it is a little cleaner sound when I put it on the computer.

Are you digitizing your vinyl through a DAT machine? Seems like an expensive and needlessly complex way to do it.

Couldn't you just connect the same line-out to the line-in on your computer?

Also, unless you do some kind of post-processing on the signal, the sound of the digital recording should be the same as the record.

Atleast all my digitized records (or cassette tapes for that matter) sound exactly like the source untill I clean up the files.

The problem that I was having is the sours was sounding weak and I cont get it the way i wanted to sound. As of right these moment I have a mixer that the turntable is plugged into then it goes into the dat and i am getting a SSSOOOOO much better stronger sound now. I want to get a DBX box try to get it sound better. I can do better with hardware then software sometimes.

So you're using the mixer as a pre-amp? I guess that works, but I can only imagine how hard it would be to find the correct settings for the RIAA equalization.

Wouldn't a DBX decoder only work for DBX encoded records? Or am I just behind on what "DBX box" means?

You can use a DBX box for encoding and playback BUT you have to use the box for the playback or no DBX. I still need a vinyl cleaner so i can deep clean the groves. That too will help with the sound.

Here is one that I am looking into getting when I get the money to have it :)..

Yeah, you do need that RIAA equalising pre-amp, or you could perhaps try the the RIAA preset in something like Audacity. But any old stereo amp --> line in on pc is the easiest.

I don't know where you live, but I do have a hazy image that it might be Denmark. Nevertheless I kinda have that same problem.

I do have a basic old Technics 2-head tape deck. Does the job but I'd prefer something better. Especially for recording to cassette.

I've also been looking for any old oscilloscopes, but seems like people just don't sell them used any-fucking-were.

I'm amazed how people in e.g. The US or Germany just go to a yardsale and find oscilloscopes.

It was a big thing in the 60's and 70's then faded out. I have seen some used for music but that is something that I don't know to much about. I have found with my dat that it is much better and still have the warmth that I am looking for when i am making mp3 or other music format. The thing that I found is i upped the bass and treble a bit and then I shrink the file down I don't lose much of the sound that i am looking for. This is 20 years in fiddling with. I need to find a really good 8-track deck so i can get them digitize over too.

I do live in Denmark. That's well remembered.

One of the main problems with finding cassette decks in Denmark is that cassette tapes never was a big format here.

People pretty much went directly from vinyl records to CDs, and the cassette tapes that were sold were primarily used in car stereos.

Luckily, I managed to get my hands on a Nakamichi Cassette Deck 1 and a Luxman K-111 back in the early '00s.

I'm not going to change those out any time soon. But the Luxman do need a new belt. The fast-forward is getting a bit sluggish.

Don't forget to grease thing from time to time that will make them last even longer. I have to break down my old console for that reason. It is 40 years old and needs a little TLC but it sounds super good for its time.

I've gotten the image that here, in Finland, recording from radio and vinyl records to cassettes to make you own mixtapes was pretty popular.

This is of course all hearsay and logical deduction because of my age I don't really know what was going on in the heyday of the c-cassette.

Because of that reason I've never had to chance pick old audio equipment in the early 00's when they were unwanted. Now that I'm around to do that most of the good stuff is highly sought after.

I am confident enough in my repair skill that I could even fix slightly broken units but I can't even find those.

With cassette tapes we probably just have to wait untill the cassette resurgence dies down a bit.

Although, since you're in Finland you should be able to find an El Cassette player and El Cassette tapes for cheap (or so I assume), since all the old stock was dumped there by Sony.

Cassette decks aren't that difficult to repair. They're pretty simply devices.

The main problem is usually the cramped space you have to work in.

Shit, I was able to repair a '70s TEAC reel-to-reel player, so pretty much everyone should be able to repair a cassette player.

I've seen some Elcasets, and some Ebay sellers are from Finland.

Never have I seen an actual deck though.

Yeah, they're pretty simple and usually only contain a very small amount of ICs.

And I'd very much like to own a reel-to-reel machine too. I probably wouldn't use it very much. But it'd fit in nicely on my table of old audio stuff.

Though they're perhaps a bit expensive to have just as decoration.

7" reel-to-reel machines can usually be had for relativly cheap. But if you're after looks, then  you're probably after a 10.5" reel-to-reel machine.

But what will really set you back is the tape for the machines. Ohh, boy that will set you back a pretty penny.

The only reason why I have a reel-to-reel machine is so that I'm able to do 100% analog recordings in my home studio.

However, I've only used it once. The people that settles for recording in a home studio aren't really the types that are willing to pay for 1/4" tape.

Ohh, yeah, when you move into machines with Dolby S you're moving into some really expensive machines.

At one point I was looking into Dolby S machines, but I don't really record enough stuff to justify the premium cost.

And most of the tapes that I own don't even make use of Dolby Noise Reduction, let alone Dolby S.

I'm curious, what is relatively cheap. I don't actually know if I can even fit a 10,5" reel-to-reel machine on my desk.

But as I don't actually have a use for it, I'm cautious of buying one. I'm not a huge fan of buying glorified paperweights.

I guess having a nice looking 70's themed desk in you home serves some purpose of the more abstract kind.

I guess "relativly cheap" is relative to your market.

You can find some of the mid-range Philips 7" machines in Germany for around €30 (excluding shipping) when they're in working condition.

Some of the iconic '70s vertical Akai machines can also be had for €100-€150 in working condition.

What a 7" reel-to-reel machin would go for locally in Finland I wouldn't know.

With one of those 7" machines you would be able to make recordings at both 7 1/2" /sec. and 3 3/4" /sec.

But you would still have to source some 1/4" tape, which can be rather costly.

They might not go at all locally, I've only seen very few 10,5" machines at the about 400 euro price and then a couple of Revox units for more than my car is worth.

And I don't think I've ever seen any at a flea market. Though it could be that I don't know where to look.

While it might be a bit too late for it, you could look into the local community centers selling out of their equipment.

A lot of larger community or youth centers are equipped to record music, so a lot of them used to have reel-to-reel machines, which they're getting rid of.

Although, I don't know if this was the case in Finland. I know it was like this in the rest of the Nordic Countries, so I assume it would be like that in Finland.
