Windows Movie Maker is pretty decent. If you want something more powerful then Lightworks.

get  Sony vegas pro 13 its good and noob friendly for beginners been using it for 2 years now i purchased it for cheap

Installing cracked software is not always a breeze. (so I've heard ;)

tbh, unless you are trying to do picture-in-picture stuff, slow mo, or other professional stuff, Windows movie maker is actually quite decent. if you record with fraps Vdub is amazing for quick cutting and joining. if you record with h.264, windows movie maker is the only completely free editor that doesn't require you to separate audio from video before cutting the video up (most free programs cause sync issues if you don't).

 

VLC video editor is is Alpha still, and horribly broken last time I used it, but when they do finally get it working properly, it will be awesome.
