[Gameinformer] Microsoft Denies GFWL Being Shutdown

EChondo

http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2014/06/19/games-for-windows-live-exodus-continues.aspx

Another news source(provided by DeViLzzz): http://www.gamespot.com/articles/microsoft-says-it-s-not-shutting-down-games-for-windows-live/1100-6420654/

We asked Microsoft about the July 1 rumors, and received this statement:

We are continuing to support the Games for Windows Live service. As previously announced, as part of the retirement of Microsoft Points the Xbox.com PC marketplace was closed. Although customers are unable to purchase new games from the marketplace or receive title updates, they can continue to enjoy previously purchased content by downloading them through the Games for Windows Live client as usual. We remain committed to investing in PC gaming in the years ahead, and look forward to sharing more in the future.

Honestly, they never "confirmed" it, except for the couple days the Age of Empires page was up: http://i.imgur.com/q513wVZ.jpg

For them to not confirm it, or even acknowledge it says to me that they have something planned. I don't know why, but I think they plan to bring Halo 1/2 over to Steamworks like their other developers have done with other series. This might just be me, but that seems to be the only last active GFWL game still using its servers.

Search for "gta iv xliveless".

You're welcome.

No, developers have been slowly moving their games off of the service. It's suppose to be shutdown next month officially, but maybe not now?

Wasn't there some drama about one of the Batman games being on GFWL?

Wasn't there some drama about one of the Batman games being on GFWL?

When it was ported over to Steam initially, there was an outcry because the removal of GFWL caused people to lose their saved games.  If you have not played the Batman series, you should be fine if you decide to get it now as it has been removed for a while now.

My PC specifications are in my profile.

Nobody likes it anyway, Microsoft. Just kill it and make sure people can still play the games they bought on it.

If keeping it up saves some of my games and their full features then I am ok with them keeping it up.  We already see other companies using their own DRM software to serve up popular games so why can't MS make GFWL better and keep older games alive and bring us something Steam-like that we may actually like?  I hope MS saves GFWL as I don't enjoy losing games in my pc collection and would like to see them function properly and fully and with some titles they won't do this if GFWL goes away and some will not work at all ever.

Also the people saying kill GFWL ...

Steam, Origin, Uplay and others are already common place and don't seem to be going anywhere so yeah I think there is room for GFWL still.

Too many ****ing games!  Back log 4 life! :S

I think at this point they should kill of GFWL, not because to "hate" on them, but because the service is practically dead at this point. Developers are moving away, porting their games over to Steamworks or other services.

If they want to remake GFWL(doubt it), then by all means do so, but the current state of GFWL is horrendous and to me they should scrap it and port their own games over OR start it up under a different name and make it worthwhile.

I fail to see why this is a bad thing. I don't want them to discontinue support for previous GFWL titles because then I wouldn't be able to play GTA IV online! Or Dead Rising 2! Not every dev will make the transition to steamworks...

I just hope they don't try the Steam model. They should all just ask Steam if they can license the software and just re-skin their stuff and have full Steam integration. That is the only way Origin and U-play will ever be any good. People have too much invested in Steam already so no one is going to convert all together. For me anyway I will never leave Steam, I have way too much money and time invested. Unless EA and Ubisoft payed me £2000 for all the time spent and all my games that is.

They clearly have said they are not going to try to be like Steam.

They are simply continuing support for old gfwl games. I don't think this means they will implement it in new games

If they can bring XBL as it stands on the Xbone to the PC, and just strip the Gold requirement (which they probably would), then bingo.

I want a all in one interface that hooks into Windows already. I need that. They have everything just sitting there for crying out loud.

MS is both the best and the worst at integrating their products sometimes.

Games for windows live was THE worst thing I have ever encountered.

GTA IV for PC is the prime example. Does not save progress unless you make an account.

The integration was even buggier with crashes everywhere.

If Microsoft is just keeping the service alive to support old games then kudos to them.

If they are integrating more games with Windows Live, well we all know what they mean by "We care about PC gaming"
