Asus R9 290 runs really hot at idle

SKOONJar

So the title pretty much explains it... I have a Asus R9 290 that is running idle temp of 49c and 47c at full blast fan. Is this card supposed to run this hot? The box says 20% cooler but I have a hard time believing amd would release a card that gets 20% higher temps than that at idle. I have drivers and gpu tweak installed. This card is brand new and has only been in my pc 2 days.

PC Specs: CPU: Intel i7 4770K / CPU COOLER: Corsair H100i / Storage: Samsung 840 EVO 120Gig and Seagate Barracuda 1Tb / Motherboard: MSI Z97 Gaming-7 / GPU: EVGA GTX 780 SC ACX / Power Supply: SeaSonic M12II 850watt / Case: Corsair 750D 680 Coaster

What are your ambient temperatures? I have the same card, and it also runs rather hot (+- 40C) in a 25C room. It is quite normal for this series to run hot.

New to Star Citizen? Look no further!

The asus coolers on the r9 290/x suck. They apparently didn't bother to change the cooler a bit and just took it from the 780, therefore it performs so very bad. I'd return it on the basis of false claims and get the sapphire tri x.

What's your ambient temperature? TBH it should only be about 5-10c above your ambiance at idle I would think. My PC says it's around 24c in the case and my 280x is at 30c idle.

Well, that is more warm than normal, so a few extra degrees shouldn't be surprising.  Load temperatures mean very little, how are temperatures under full load?

This is because the cooler is a piece of shit.

I had a 290x myself they just put a 780 cooler on it and that cooler doesn't fit right so that's why it runs so hot just return the card. And get a sapphire.

That's your only option mate.

At fan speed at 90% running furmark it hit 79-83c.

A fair bit but in general these are hot cards you might save some money for a 780.

Too bad man. Should've gotten a MSI or Sapphire model.

Does it throttle at those temps or does it remain 99%-100%?

This, and also you bought the wrong R9 290. The ASUS coolers for the R9 290 are originally intended for the GTX 780. You should've gotten an R9 290 from an AMD exclusive manufacturer, like Sapphire, PowerColor and HIS. They have the best coolers for AMD graphics cards.

Ambient temps where I live is around 36 to 38C and my friend's R9 290 Gigabyte Windforce and Sapphire Tri-X idle at around 41 to 44C (Tri-X gets the lower temps). Fan is set to auto. I think yours is normal considering the bad cooler.
