680 Lightning Coaster * Now with PICS*

SKOONJar

*Upon request I'm telling the story of how I got a 680 Lightning as a drink coaster... Prepare yourself for a long story full of FACEPALMAGE!*

So I work at a movie theater I have worked there for quite some time and I became known as the tech guy for them. I had started out working the counter/cashier but got promoted to public relations coordinator(partially because I dealt with our facebook and twitter page though) because they couldn't label me as tech guy. So on with the story... I built them 2 systems over a 3 month time span. One was a complete joke because my boss didn't take my advice and put a AMD 7970 lightning in a rendering machine( I now own the 7970 I talked him into a K5000 (he wanted the best so I told him what was)). The second machine is where I got my coaster from. He wanted a second machine to deal with the 2D normal content creation( 2D work and Photoshop ads ) and for updating the website. I got a 3770k and a 680 Lightning for that machine. The 680 comes in and its a dud right out of the box. So I asked for a new one they sent it then asked for the dud. I had the new one delivered to my work so I could build the full machine there during work hours and get paid for it. I tried to get there early so then my idiot boss couldn't get his hands on it but I didn't get there soon enough he had already opened the box and was holding it un-grounded( he said the dam thing shocked him) with a cup of coffee near by(that comes into play soon). A customer asks for his help so he set the card down on the counter and not paying attention knocks his coffee over on the new 680 Lightning. MSI doesn't cover that kind of mistake so he ordered a new one with more of the company money. This ones safe inside a computer now and the one that had coffee spilled on it is now a coaster for my drinks. Now All that money spent with graphics card conflicts (and lots of other mistakes) makes you wonder how a company that makes so many mistakes is still in business. Truth is they are going out of business December because my boss( the manager not the owner ) uses company money to cover his mistakes. We don't normally have a week where he has to spend $2000 of company money to fix something.

And that is how I became owner of 3 MSI lightning cards 2 680's and 1 7970.( First one I bought off a family member for 250$ )

Oh wow atleast you have a really expensive coaster with awesome thermal conduction on it :3. Another note hows the 7970 and the other 680 lightning treating you?

They're good cards no complaints the lightning branding isn't worth the extra cash if you ask me though. The 7970 I got is a poor overclocker. I swap between the 2, I want to get a socket 2011 system together and make a video editing rig and put the 680 in it. However I really like the 3 gigabytes of vram on the 7970 for all the skyrim mods I have.

Very nice :D Would have been cool to see 2 different cup holders from 1 card.

I would if it didn't have the reactor on it but I rarely have 2 drinks on my desk the gpu reactor would just be another thing taking up desk space.

now you can be like that Ward Hale guy from Tigerdirect...he uses gpus as coffee mug coasters.

I actually really want a GPU coaster now. :( But the only GPUs in my house are an ATI, something old, and my 680 DCU2, which isn't going under my mug when it kicks the bucket  ^_^ Old Logan makes me jealous.

Did you actually check to see if it was dead before you started smashing off transistors with your oversized cup?

Cool story though :P
