Capcom ditched Denuvo DRM only to add new one: Enigma, and it gets worse

2 hours ago, AndreiArgeanu said:

It's always the paying customer that gets screwed when companies introduce the stupid DRM. Why in GODs name are they even adding it now? Some understanding can be given if it's a newly released game because it can help with sales. I think RDR2 went uncracked for quite a while because of it's DRM. But old games? They've been cracked and redistributed to no end. Who at Capcom thought this was a good idea?

BECAUSE NUDE MODS, its not that hard to understand...

I doubt nude mods the real reason tbh

if it's really just because nude mods...

They may want to just release game with characters that doesn't even resemble a living being.

Because there's a shit ton of porn cosplay, hentai, 3d porn video and pics of capcom's game characters.

nah, its pretty obvious,  you can have drm that still allows mods (denuvo did)... this seems specifically targeted at the modding community , especially because its older titles,  that have been cracked for ages...

It would never be granted too, so you really are left with zero options other than complaining on the internet (rarely effective) or get the situation in front of someone with actual influence (also difficult).

i agree... complaining has probably better chances of succeeding,  but it doesn't fix the overall problem... making software worse and harder to use through updates, should,  and in part already is, be against the law.

BTW have a these marketing acts been implemented by now (or some) i don't know?

can you (officially) uninstall google from Android phones now, can you uninstall Safari from iPhones, etc, etc?

A lot of Apple's default apps are removable, but I do not believe Safari is. I'm not running the latest version of iOS, so maybe things have changed since the release of iOS 17.

This is just the rabbit hole of "all mods are cheats, not all cheats are mods"

All client-sided mods that hook into the game, are cheats. There are of course other ways of cheating (eg network, memory, usb controller maco's, monitor crosshairs, etc) And DRM can't address hacking that comes from outside the game client.

Mods that come from changing the game before launch, won't be detected unless the game checks the files every time. Leading to long launch times. If a game is meant to be played online, then that has to happen. If a game has no online component, but just has DLC or microtransaction crap in it, then DRM is necessary to ensure the player actually bought the DLC and didn't just change the "dlc=1" variable in the config file (which is how "day 1 dlc" tends to work.)

Games with no DRM, have people cheating with impunity and claiming "quality of life". See FFXIV. This has happened not just once but every time. It's just those are the only times people were caught.

Game companies can not trust the user enough to run competitions and ensure everyone plays fair. So DRM ends up being a way to annoy those who haven't done anything wrong, and provide a tiny hurdle for those who are still going to cheat.

If Capcom feels that strongly about rooting someone's PC to protect their intellectual property; perhaps they should instead just sandbox the app entirely; performance be damned.

okay, jokes aside

yeaaaah I do think it's also kinda easy to see the pattern? Like, out of nowhere they made a presentation about how modding is not different to cheating even if it's just cosmetics related modding, and how mods can morally ruin the reputation of certain games. Then, not too long before the DRM update, they also took down some MH Sunbreak modding videos

so there's no doubt they're doing this to prevent modding which is just mindblowing considering how tame they've usually been with modding, now just because of NSFW mod in tourney, they decided that enough is enough while at the same time RE4make and DMC also have a ton of them? That's quite suspicious

yeah.... they're testing waters.... im sure the plan is to have this "software" eventually in every capcom game, like i said the intent is very clear, what triggers them now to do this, who knows...

capcom never really cared about "cheating" either, plus obviously this will not prevent cheating...

i really hope the fact that they went with a Russian 1 man garage show for this bites them in the butt hard, like literally wtf.

and i gotta say even without that, are they really that unaware people specifically buy their games to mod them? capcom games have some of the most sophisticated modding tools made by fans out there,  this will piss so many people off, it's not even funny  (also watch them putting this is single player games because  "cheating"...)

I do think the reason why people modded capcom games is not because they can just mod the old one and not buy the new or remake ones. Most Capcom games holds up very well with mods, even newer titles with mods is also fun and the mods for it released relatively quick. And again, Capcom is fine with people playing the old games. So I don't think this is the reason why

the thing is while its true people can play older titles longer with mods (which is indeed one of the main reasons for modding)  its also true that capcom games have been traditionally easy to mod, and people *will* buy the new games coming out usually day 1!

a lot of times there's also already mods on day 1 because of how easy it is *and* because there's a gazillion of modders just waiting for that day...  (often even capcom demos have mods already)

now, well, i think a lot of people will just pirate the games or play something else entirely.

that's besides all the other issues of having a performance hampering,  possibly spy bot / russian trojan on your pc , also again i question this legally...

holy shit just realized something ironic from this and the presentation is that Capcom themself is also the one that pinned the RE4HD Project on the steam community. It was not pinned by moderators or anyone outside Capcom, it was LITERALLY pinned by Capcom themself

we went from that to this...

Ngl, this very much vindicates my choice to always look to GoG first, when seeking out a particular game.

I don’t own many Capcom games myself. Resident Evil RE on 3DS, Monster Hunter 3U on 3DS, and the Phoenix Wright trilogy for PC. Surprisingly, I don’t own any PS1 or PS2 Capcom games, though my Dad has the og Resident Evil game.

I don't own any 3D ones. I have Phoenix Wright, Ghost Trick, and all the Megaman stuff for the PC. Neither Monster Hunter or Resident Evil really made me feel they were must-have games. All the wacky capcom stuff I liked was 8-bit and 16-bit era.

I don’t really support ‘sailing the seas’ because a bunch of good, well-meaning game studios lose money to it and that is always a shame; Someone just being a cheap-o and not supporting an industry they enjoy, sucks. That said, any time a studio implements aggressive, unreasonable DRM like this I am happy when some group finds a way to disable it.
