Wi-Fi 5 vs Wi-Fi 6

Does Wi-Fi 6 is not just faster but way more secure than Wi-Fi 5 ? I heard that Wi-Fi 5 not have any protection against brute force password crack while Wi-Fi 6 get extra security layer that prevents from brute force password crack.

Wifi 6 introduced WPA3 which is a stronger form of encryption but to say wifi 5 has no protection against brute force password cracks is ridiculous. WPA2 was plenty good at that and compatible with wifi 5

So many questions start with "I heard that...".  

 

I'd love to know where so we can correct them, at the source.   WiFi6 is better, but Wifi 5 isn't bad in any way.  At some point, we're just upgrading to upgrade.  WiFi 5 at my house all day.

Well I read about Wi-Fi 6 and it have better security against brute force password crack as well it make impossible decrypt data that someone get before password crack.

Wording matters.  Just because it's better, doesn't mean the previous was bad.

What?  What does your neighbor have to do with Wifi 5 still having solid protections?

 

Is your neighbor in the CIA or NSA and bringing the entirety of the US Government's supercomputers to brute force your Wifi?

In apartment building is really realistic scenario that someone can try crack Wi-Fi password. Just to get free network or in worst scenario try steal personal data like credit card numbers. I seen in apartments building than someone create Wi-Fi network and leave it open to everyone. That is really suspicious.

Your neighbor is not going to crack WPA2 any time soon. WPA3 is more secure in the sense the it adds more protection against possible future threats, regardless of whether WPA2 is actively being exploited or not.

 

~edit: Also WPA3 and Wi-Fi 6 are independent. My old router received an update that allows it to support WPA3, though it does not support Wi-Fi 6. So if you want more security, make sure your router (and all devices) support WPA3.

They can also break down your door and steal your wallet, tv and bananas.

You are 100% correct.  People will try that.  But they won't get thru WiFi 5's protections when used properly.

 

Just because they TRY doesn't mean they SUCCEED.

WPA3 offers that, but I have a wifi 5 router that got WPA3 support after a firmware upgrade.

 

So it is a feature of newer routers - Not just exclusive to Wifi 6 or later. Also your client devices have to support WPA3 for it to work.

 

Also keep in mind that Wifi 6 compared to 5 only offers faster theoretical speeds at 5 GHz, meaning relatively close range. So it won't extend its range limits (on 2.4 GHz) because there been no change to transmit power. Wifi 6 does also offer better network congestion handling in terms of sheer number of devices, but only if your client devices support wifi 6, which includes Galaxy S10, iPhone 11, and some newer phones than those.

Then they still need to break the HTTPS encryption over which your credit card transactions happen, unless you send that in clear text for some reason

Btw due I use IPS router I can't even block router settings acces over Wi-Fi basically if someone connect to Wi-Fi they coudl have full acces to router settings. That I think change new router that support Wi-Fi 6 as well not just older version. I conect PC, TV over Ethernet anyway and my phone support Wi-Fi 6 + 6 Ghz and that is the only one device that is connected over Wi-Fi. Technically I could as well connect PC to Wi-Fi 6 due it support.

Btw anyone can recommend decent router brand ? I'm looking some decent brand that offer good quality and support and won't install 3rd party trash in their router like some do for example offer some VPN that is preinstalled in router directly.

What in the world are you talking about? Connecting to Wi-Fi does not give someone access to the router's login. Administration username and password are needed for that.

At least mine router from IPS not have option controll what device can acces to router settings or block conection over Wi-Fi at all. Basically all device that is conect to router can acces to settings if know pasword.

Isn't that how most things are?   You can gain access if you have the password?   It's how passwords work.

I do love my Ubiquiti mesh but wasn't sure how their single routers are.
