Linus needs a vacation.

Zondollor

Over the past few years after having watched LTT grow from just Linus talking about what is worth buying and what is honestly hot garbage to now employing over 100 people and producing 20+ videos per week brings me to the conclusion that the work just isn't getting any easier and that Linus needs a vacation.

Isn't that exactly why he's stepping down as CEO? To reduce his burnout and lets him focus on the fun stuff? His new vision role is basically his vacation. He gets to hang around his job, not do all the stressful stuff and still get paid for it.

In the long term, a fun and enjoyable career position will do great far more than even a month long holiday and then going back to the grind.

I think it is safe to assume that this man still goes on vacations. They just shoot extra video's/have somebody else host a video so he can go on a trip.

I think @venomtail nailed it pretty much tbh

There’s whole industries where the low level worker works less time in the year than most CEOs.
On paper our CEO is M-F 9-5. Our particular site is 2 weeks on 2 off. Mix that with 17 days of PTO a year and no one out here really works much more than 5 months a year.

Generalizations are bad m’kay?

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

Most notable CEOs are actually extraordinarily focused, hard workers.

First its touching that you are so concerned with a person you've never met.

Second these videos are produced weeks and months in advance. Their upload schedule is not an indication of how much and when they are working. And the few videos that Linus appears in are not even produced by him. He is little more than a host.

Third Linus was chilling in Taiwan so I'm sure he's doing OK.

Computex is a work trip, not a vacation.

And god forbid people have downtime during a work day.

As someone who's running their own company, this is the most tone-deaf comment I think I've seen on here.

Not that I don’t want a vacation. Just that, I find little reason tbh.

He does have vacation time (probably as much as Canadian workers laws say you must have at minimum). He talks about it in WAN Shows, and employees have done goofs couple of times to emphasize it. But they do stuff with several days to weeks of backlog, just in case. Its production cycle. And since they have extra hosts to make LTT videos, you probably won't notice that he's on vacation unless he clearly remotes to WAN Show.

Seems like some people forget, he has family. Just because you see him on screen every day doesn't mean he's in office everyday. We aren't in 1950s where tape was luxury.

But with important positions, one must always wonder, can he really let go of work stuff and be at peace? I don't know how vacations work in Canada. Here its common for workers (CEOs included) to have 2-5 week vacations, usually during summer. 4 weeks being most common. In that timeframe, its said that you spend first week forgetting your work and last week trying to start remembering it.

We have a drill sitting down waiting to be commissioned because of this 2-5 week vacation thing. It's kind of a funny sight when a $2,000,000 drill shows up to site, a Finish guy spends a week training mechanics then splits for the summer while he goes back to Lapland to sit on a lake and drink beer.

The thing about running a YouTube channel is you can't really take a vacation or stop. It's basically swim or die. You fall off algorithmically, you start losing views, revenue stops coming in, your videos stop getting recommended and the channels suffers the "long goodbye". There are lots of channels with millions of subs pulling in only couple hundo-thousands view compared to their milly bangers of the earlier days.

Linus ideally need to cultivate a new generation of idea people and characters as a contingency in case anything happens, the company can keep swimming.... BUT...the thing about having your name on the side of the building and in the company name is...you kinda painted yourself into a corner on that one.

Youtube isn't that different from classic businesses that sell continuous product. Its odd that anyone would view Youtube that different from gas station or your basic 7-11 or any food service. All those are business which rely on constant flow of customers and cash. Take a weeks vacation? Loose weeks worth of profits. There are some small businesses where they can plan ahead with overhead to cover additional costs (like hiring temps) or loss of profit and come back without short stops having big effects. Usually these are services where you make appointment anyway. Like smaller barber shops, massage parlors etc. The rest will have to hire temps or have enough staff to keep things running.

He has staff, enough that they don't really need him to approve anything. The reason he's getting someone to handle CEOs role is to make sure what he brings can be documented and spread to more people, everything to allow him more time with his family.

As for having your name on company.... Its not named "Sebastian". Unlike Dell, McAfee, Ford, Toyota, Mitsubishi etc. So what does that have to do with anything? Its not like Linus Torvalds gets bothered about any mishap Linux-community makes.
