Why Is The Forums So Out Of Date

Go to solution Solved by adm0n,

What would you actually want to become more modern? I'd say the look of the Forum is pretty modern. I could try to become more responsive and get loaded with animations, but I don't think that would make it more functional in any way.

And aside from that, I'm not really missing any features.

I was just wondering why is the whole forum site

completly out of date. I mean there entire systems

are all more like they are made in 2010! But i still use it so

yeah i still like the forums i was just wondering if they might

modernise it.

Its a forum... the whole concept is pretty old at this point, but not IMO outdated.

It is very functional for its purpose. Also, Luke and Linus have mentioned on WAN that it's as cost and not an income generator, so I figure it doesn't recieve a lot of development funds.

I can't really see a lot of quality of life improvements to the format anyway, but maybe I lack vision in that aspect 🙂

mITX is awesome! I regret nothing (apart from when picking parts or have to do maintainance *cough*cough*)

God please no. Reddit so much harder to read than this Forum, with people having threads within threads and all that stuff.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

It is clean, clear and readable. Simplicity is the way to go for information transfer and that's what a forum should be about. Not a glossy unintelligible mess.

Do you read books? Are they simple readable text?

Or do you read comics? A mess of colours and rambling bits.

I suggest being way more specific if you want any hope of change, modern is a very ambigious word. Are you talking about ui, missing functions, etc.

What is even "modern" to you?
It's a forum. What did you want? Something awful like what reddit did?

CPU: AMD Ryzen 3700x / GPU: Asus Radeon RX 6750XT OC 12GB / RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x8GB DDR4-3200
MOBO: MSI B450m Gaming Plus / NVME: Corsair MP510 240GB / Case: TT Core v21 / PSU: Seasonic 750W / OS: Win 10 Pro

Few places that doesn't look like a traditional BB forum
Reddit - Threaded replies, ewww
Nvidia - Laggy af layout
AMD - Threaded replies, ewww
Level1Tech - Navigation and layout need some time to get use too, look like an email client.

I also think that there is a limit of how much it is possible to optimize human interaction via text. Having threadceptions makes it possible to follow multiple paths to an answer at once, without being impossible to find what you want. While in a linear forum like this one, you'd have to go through the whole thread to find out about everything being said.

But I strongly prefer the linear design over reddits for threads where just a few people interact. Reddit with this linear design would also be awful. So different tools for different jobs.

Maybe make some specific suggestions?

Modern or new isn't always better. I like how categories are organized.

The host also is limited by what the software allows. I've seen much worse forums based on older software.

The only feature this forum is missing, is that if I put a user on ignore, I would make all the threads that user starts be invisible to me. Right now, only their posts are hidden. That would make it a bit more clean and not waste my time going into threads by people I ignore (I don't remember all the usernames I ignore...lol)

That is my only suggestion for improvement.

AMD 9 7900 + Thermalright Peerless Assassin SE

Gigabyte B650m DS3H

2x16GB GSkill 60000 CL30

Samsung 980 Pro 2TB

Fractal Torrent Compact

Seasonic Focus Plus 550W Platinum

W11 Pro

As someone who spent far too much time on phpbb2 forums over the years, this place is damn near futuristic.

Threaded replies are a terrible user experience. They're worse than Linux greybeard mailing lists.

I sold my soul for ProSupport.

Easy to do on the Linux Mint forum. Just put "square bracket" "quote" "square bracket", the text being quoted and then "square bracket" "/" "quote" square bracket and the bit below happens. Quote in each case is that word - quote

Quote

at the start of something to be quoted and

at the end of the sentence.

Works every time.

Um yeah the point being you don't have to do any of that on this forum. 🙄
