The problem is that sponsorships always derail that, so that's never going to be a thing. LMG can meet us half way there and do the fun stuff with sponsorships, and then do the "vendor agnostic quality review" without one.

 

This is my main fundamental concern with the whole Labs project.

 

I am skeptical that Labs content can be profitable enough to be self-sustaining. If it's not, then the "just for fun"/sponsored/less rigorous content has to foot the bill for it. Even if Labs content is at least not a money-loser, then the less rigorous content will still continue in parallel and threaten to undermine the credibility of Labs content. In short, it's a matter of trying to "serve two masters," or at least the perception of such. 

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. Watch this space for further truths people need to hear.

Definitely unlikely to have a PSU, not least of which because Johnny Guru works for Corsair and they don't advertise Johnny Guru worked on this PSU.

Linus though has indicated interest in gaming mice, but the main periphal that he talked about in the future was HDMI and what not cable.

Linux as far as LMG is concerned in production is used in a few of the servers, though I believe FreeBSD is used in more of them with TrueNAS.

ETC makes some good stuff, even if their software interface can be a pain sometimes.

Yeah, ETC can be a giant pain in the rear, and yeah, if they ever do a full studio overhaul, properly wiring it up with dmx and a light console would be really cool, and yeah cheap wifi and bluetooth lighting stuff almost never works 😂

I'm not a Floatplane subscriber, but from what I can tell on their page, its the same thumbnail and title. It makes sense from a continuity stand-point to name the videos the same, but you'd think that they wouldn't have to worry about the algorithm there...

I think that GamersNexus are a good example of charts in some ways. But they're also a good example of some of the difficult choices you have to make with graphs.

 

Linus mentioned that they get a lot of viewers on phones and information dense charts like GN uses are illegible to me on my phone. I can only watch GN on a bigger screen like my iPad or desktop.

 

I think you're right that the team should be looking at what GN does, but I don't think they should copy them. 

 

Check out this visualization from an MKBHD video. It's not a chart, but it's a graphic that looks fine on a big screen like a desktop (where this screenshot is from) and is totally legible on even a small phone.

 

I don't think they should exactly copy this either, but I do hope that their team has people looking seriously at the benefits and draw backs of information dense charts like GN and legibility first visualizations like MKBHD's team build.

I think you and Linus just disagree about what a good review is. "Should I buy it" isn't the main question The Lab seems to be trying to answer. It's more "Company says product X can do thing Y; can it?". 

 

You're looking for something like this where a working professional with experience talks about the gear he uses and what you might want to buy. I like videos like that too, but for the things that I'm interested in (music production, and programming) there's a good amount of that already available. I think The Lab is smart to focus more on testing the the claims manufacturers make. That's something that very very few other outlets are doing.

I mean, coming from a role where I did RF testing for the likes of Nokia, Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T (among others), I've got my own issues with the current WiFi setup at Linus' place, and hopefully once other higher priorities in the Lab are dealt with, we can do a video on it. That being said, Labs is an entirely new branch of LMG, completely separated from the rest of the company in how we do testing and analysis, so even if that is his motive, it still doesn't stand as valid.

A thumbnail that caters to an algorithm hardly engenders credibility in a savvy viewer intent on gleaning useful information. Maybe videos from The Lab, and not LTT, will shun the algorithm.

Maybe consumers should shun the algorithm.

For the graphs, I highly recommend the use of Tableau. It can be FULLY automated. Speaking from experience as a Tableau developer and Tableau Server admin.

 

It not only has a comprehensive API at the front end, but it's driven by a PostgreSQL database that is fully documented by Tableau and is very flexible. I even automated much of the data extracts and visualisation exports from SQL Server Integration jobs, of all things.

Agreed, I think his annoyance about one thing might blind him and lead to invalid arguments about other things. I look forward to seeing the results of the RF testing, one thing that I imagine isn't a priority but might be cool is to test some of the big products that claim to have RF blocking and see if they actually do. I feel like if I remember correctly from uni it is relatively easy, and really doesn't require the equipment you have, but I could see with the top Amazon product it turns out they don't actually use the metal needed for RFID blocking.

Personally, I'm excited about the potential of Labs and learning about professions in tech that as a uni student and now a worker on semi-boring stuff I never imagined.

I think it's important to separate the graphs for videos, presentations, and articles from the ones that go on a website, they're very different use cases. For videos, presentations, etc. I'm a huge fan of Jean-luc Doumont's style, his more recent presentations are even better but this one gets most of the points across:

For the website it might be a good idea to enable the user to change particular things about the graphs, like adding/removing a grid, switching dark/bright, colour scheme if intensity is used, etc. And that could very much be part of a paid subscription feature set.
