The paywalled report purports to reveal a broad range of previously unheard-of specific features for the headset, including:

 

  • A waist-mounted battery, connected via a magnetic, MagSafe-like power cable to the headset's headband. One battery charge lasts no longer than two hours, but users can swap the battery out for longer sessions.
  • A design that uses aluminum, glass, and carbon fiber to reduce its size and weight. Cameras are largely concealed for aesthetic reasons.
  • A small, Digital Crown-like dial on its right side that enables users to quickly transition between the virtual and physical world. Unlike the Apple Watch, it will not offer haptic feedback.
  • Apple has developed different headbands, including one for consumers made of a similar material to Apple Watch sport bands with built-in speakers, and one targeted at developers.
  • Magnetically attachable custom prescription lenses for glasses-wearers.
  • Small motors to automatically adjust its internal lenses to match the wearer's interpupillary distance, providing the largest field of view possible for each individual.
  • A 120-degree field of view, like the Valve Index – more than the Meta Quest Pro's 106-degree field of view.
  • The H2 chip for ultra-low latency connection with the second-generation AirPods Pro and future AirPods models.
  • Two chips, including a main SoC, including a CPU, GPU, and memory, and a dedicated image signal processor. Both are fabricated with a 5nm process, meaning that the headset misses out on advancements expected to come to other Apple chips later this year. The chips communicate via a custom streaming codec that Apple was forced to develop due to unacceptable latency.
  • The dedicated ISP translates the distorted images captured by the external cameras into a faithful video representation of the user's surroundings with low latency. The chip contains custom high-bandwidth memory made by SK Hynix.
  • The ability to run existing iOS apps in 2D.

 

My thoughts

The fanny pack battery is a bit of a letdown but maybe a couple of years down the road the smaller battery in the headband will be enough to power <1nm power sipping chips and power saving microLED displays (compared to the Sony 4K microOLED displays that Apple’s first headset is going to use).

 

The H2-to-H2 low latency (maybe even lossless?) audio communication is a nice surprise, and I wanna see it in every other Apple product going forward! Put an H2 in every iPhone, iPad, AppleTV and Mac! Could be a game changer for Airpods. Unless it’s technically feasible on the headset only because the Airpods and the device are at a predictable (and very short) range at all times, whereas in iPhone/iPad/Mac to Airpods communication the focus is on resilience at wildly different distances and interferences. 

 

Windowed iOS apps are a nice headstart for app availability on the xrOS App Store. TikTok on day one! (maybe 👀)

I was thinking, from the 1950s to 2016 people would wear a cable running from the head to a waist level device (be it a transistor radio, a Walkman, an iPod or a smartphone), for wired headphones, both indoors and outdoors.

 

With that context, a waist mounted battery and a cable running up to the head, mostly indoors (it’s not like people will walk around in these headsets…famous last words), isn’t too much of a stretch to imagine.

This is it, this headset is going to usher in the new age of social norms accepting people having headsets on in public. I also expect it to be $1999+ with the specs it has and I'm also really excited to see Apples implementation of mixed reality. The article says it even tracks the users legs?? So I am guessing inside out tracking for hand movements/gestures but it's actually usable this time. I would imagine Samsungs headset will leak any day now as well

Speaking of bumping into things/people/furniture, I read in an Apple patent that xrOS may automatically fade into passthru reality when you’re about to bump into something.

 

Courtesy of the fact this headset has like more LIDARs and cameras than an autonomous car 😄 (that’s also how they’re gonna have VR legs)

I don't think we'll see folks wearing anything more than AR glasses in public, and that might carry some of the stigma we saw back in the Google Glass heyday. Apple's initial headset is likely aimed at creators and enthusiasts who'll remain safely inside!

I do find it amusing how much backlash there was against the "creepy spying" Google Glass and then like two years later Apple put a facial recognition camera in everyone's pocket and there was nary a peep.

Biometrics is a convenience one chooses to inflict upon himself. (possibly after evaluating how secure the whole system is, or letting security advocacy groups do the research)

 

I don’t see the analogy with the “Glassholes” social phenomenon. I do wonder though how Apple will handle the “sneaky recording” thing. Maybe a big red “Now recording” warning on the outer OLED display of the headset 🤣 Or a bright colored warning light. Apple needs to establish a canonical way to handle this to pave the way for their eventual light frame glasses.

Nope, it’s supposed to run the M2 (Staten) main SoC and the “R2” (Bora) video coprocessor. (I’ve just made up “R2” for convenience sake, we still don’t know the actual marketing name, just the Bora codename).

 

The R2 will gather and process the inputs of like 17 cameras and LIDARs.

 

The R2-M2 interconnect will be extremely low latency, the final lag of the passthru mode will be unheard of.

Incidentally this will be the first Apple computer with hot swappable batteries in decades 🙃 Just like on some Thinkpads, a smaller internal battery in the headband will keep the headset running while the user swaps the waist-mounted battery. 

 

The fanny pack battery will also allow for the headset itself to weight just around 300-400g, compared the 500g Quest2 and the 722g QuestPro. While also being stupidly more powerful than both, thanks to the M2. (it will cost 2000-3000$ to be fair, but the Quest Pro ain’t exactly cheap as well)

Two things. As Salty noted, Face ID is tied to the selfie camera on your phone and is used only for biometric authentication. You can't point it at a friend and scan their face into Apple's system. For that matter, Apple has strict controls that keep the data local, with extremely limited access . It's only storing data points, too, and not imagery.

 

Google caught flak for Glass because it was clearly a product designed by engineers lacking social awareness. Surely no one will object to having a camera constantly pointed at them during a conversation, right? No, the developers weren't trying to spy on people, but privacy wasn't even really on the radar.

Basically, 1nm and under manufacturing doesn’t mean transistors of the same size. It just reflects how they want to market 3D stacking.

they couldn't put the battery in the device?

either this is a step for right to repair or the engineers didn't have time to put the battery into the device because of some executive.

i have the feeling its the latter since these dudes make some of the thinnest devices on the planet.

i mean seriously, if quest can do it so can apple thats no excuse to not put it into the headset.

i don't like vr but even i can agree thats bullshit.

The Quest headsets have smartphone-grade CPUs/GPUs

 

Apple’s headset has a laptop CPU/GPU and weights almost HALF as much as a Quest Pro.

 

So while one can agree or not with the design choice, there are plenty of excuses to need a beefier external battery.

It's like someone at Facebook told Zuck that the future is VR+AR, to bet the company on it, and didn't understand that they meant it has to be a comfortable, controller-free experience first. 

 

Which is where I'll make my only prediction about this. Whatever the "input" method is for this device is, if it requires hand-held controllers and can't just deal with the operators hands in the air, it's not going to be innovative enough. What made the "iphone" work was the lack of stylus, that all other devices before it had. This is the same user experience problem. The "controllers" for things like the Valve and HTC HMD's  are based around a "game" experience that has been essentially unchanged since the NES, and those VR spaces make everyone look like they have their hands in a fist position because of the controller rather than being able to open their hand. Meanwhile AR, shouldn't need controllers at all and suffice with seeing the users's finger tips.

I think it will use gaze + bare hands for general usage (kinda like multitouch on the iPhone), and clip-on smart thimbles/rings (as seen in Apple patents) for precise/specialized input (kinda like the Pencil on iPads).

 

The thimbles may even have haptic feedback.

 

And Sony/Nintendo/Xbox controllers for gaming. (they’re natively supported on iOS/iPadOS/macOS/tvOS, can’t see why they wouldn’t be supported on xrOS, possibly including Sony’s PSVR2 controllers)

If it's primarily intended as "AR", like in existing uses of ARKit (head, face, eyes tracking) that might be a good use case for motion capture and vtubers, but "2 hour battery life" is hardly useful in that purpose. So tethering a battery is not impractical there either. The less weight on your head, the better.

 

For VR however, I think intending it as a "game first" device would have been a mistake. Yes, existing BT controllers work on iOS/macOS-derived systems, but there is no standard way of tracking hands. Like go back a bit with the recently released Sony mocopi , that most likely requires monopolization of the phone to do the motion capture, just like how Vtube Studio or ifacialmocap requires monopolization of the device due to needing access to the camera. 

 

If the HMD itself can do the tracking all itself, that would put it in the same tier as mocap suits, but I doubt it will be anything more than head-face-eyes-mouth/shoulders/hands-fingers, since other tracking points (eg feet) require additional sensors since it can't be tracked with cameras or LiDAR.
